This unit was sold by Sears as a medicinal aid.  The end of the unit puts out high voltage.  There was a glass tube with a metal cap that went into the hole.  The tube was filled with a gas, such as neon or argon.  When rubbed on the skin, it was thought that the high voltage that was conducted to the skin through the tube was beneficial.
