Cat's often have dry or hard stools, causing irritation when they defecate. Most often, if it's happening all the time, the cat straining is secondary to a parasitic problem like worms, coccidia, or giardia (especially in kittens). These problems (ie coccidia) don't always show in the cat's behavior. It's also possible your cat has Irritable Bowel Syndrom, or colitis, although these are more serious and harder for general practioning vets to diagnose. If the problem continues, and shows no improvement take him to the vet.
