In a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport, when stepping on the gas peddle, there is a loud banging noise that seems to be coming from the transmission.  It also occasionally bangs when coming to a complete stop.. is this common in these vehicles???

I had the same problem... there was recall or atleast a documented problem with the drive lines.  Dealer replaced it free of charge.

I would check the overdrive planetaries located in the rear housing of the transmission.

Our Cherokee Sport is a 2000.  We had a similar nose.  The shocks were changed, a steering damper replaced and a muffler bracketd tightened and it still made the noise.

It didn't do it all the time, only after the car warmed up and some turns were made.

The sound came from the center console and we were worried that it might be the transmission.

I had it looked at again today when we could finally get it to make the noise for the mechanic.  He said that a bold on the four wheel drive plate had backed out by a ¼" and it was touching the solenoid.  He tightened the bold and lubricated a swivel point and it hasn't made the noise for him again.

We will know in about an hour if it worked when we pick it up.  If not we will add to this forum.
