ANSWER TO THE MYSTERY... What you are hearing is not the sounds of puppies crying, but your shih-tzu dreaming and barking in her sleep.  They give a high pitched bark that sounds like a puppy yelp.  And since they are asleep it is usually muffled, so it is not very loud.

I want to first say...the womb of a canine is much like the womb of a human, it is sucured with a lining that insulates and protects the babies. It is NOT puppies that you heard from your female, but they do make some funny sounds sometimes!
Good Luck

What you can hear is the bowel contents moving. Puppies in utero haven't breathed yet so they haven't learned to cry or bark, they would drown if they were crying or barking.  So using this as a sign of pregnancy is a =NO.   Look for other signs: nipples getting bigger, more breast tissue, her vulva remaining large, she may be losing her waist line, becoming tired, not as active and either going off her food or eating everything in sight. (a change in eating patterns)
