I have two black tri australian shepards. A mommy (kylie) and her baby (Paige).  They are both very smart. They both know who their owner's are, and when someone comes over that they don't know, they bark some, and are a little standoff-ish.  Kylie has become a ton more protective since she has had babies.  I think that if someone where to break in to my house, you would hear a ton of barking, but I don't think that they would become violent at all... they will just wake you up and let you know. :)  As for the question if they get bored easily.  I don't think they do.  But I also believe that it is because their is two of them, and they keep themselves very busy.  I seriously think that they can play forever.  As far as I am concerned I think they are the best pet anyone can have.

yes they will protect your family! Our dog is a very family dog, but gets a long very well with  neighbors and their pets if he sees them very much. We play with our dog a lot, but probably no more than you should with other dogs. He loves to feed horses (he's a cowdog wanna be). but once they know where they live and where they can go they are very  centered around that. Our dog is 8 years old and very dependable, if someone pulls in to the house that he dosen'ntknow he goes to his room, (laundry room) and stays there. But you have to set boundries and what is exceptable behavior and what is not. You don't have to beat it into them but be consistent with everything and they remember all of it@

Australian Shepards are very loyal and protective, but only when they feel that their owner is in danger.  My aussie will get bored if she doesn't have something to do all day.  A great way to keep her entertained is with a kong.  She also plays with our older golden retriver and she likes to jump on the trampoline.

absolutely! my aussie (buddy)is an excellent guard dog, but luckily not an attack dog.  Aussies are reputed to fight to the death when it comes to protecting the house, herd, etc.....even against a sure death like a grizzly bear.

I own an australian shepard and yes they are very protective. The breed is extremly smart, almost too smart. They do have to have something to do or they will get in trouble, it dosent have to be much just chewing on a bone is my dogs favorite but make sure some activity is avaliable as these are large curious dogs.

Our Assie is very protective.  Does better with people who come into the house as she ages.  We do not let her be around young children.  She is especially protective of me, Mom, idolizes Dad and protects, at all costs, her "Sheep", our three teenage daughters.

She is not found of males/men other than Grandpa, one family friend, and Dad.

Great great SMART dogs.  They do love to work!!  Lots of runs and outside time.

Australian Shepards are generally very protective of what is theirs. If someone breaks into your house your Aussi will probably protect it. They are very protective of their owners. They are very active, but you don't have to keep your dog active all day. My Aussi stays home while I come to work and has learned to keep herself entertained, but she loves it when I come home and play with her. I also joined a kennel club. Aussies are very friendly dogs and very social. Mine competes in agility and she loves the challange and sport, plus it keeps her active and occupied for hours. They are protective of whats theirs but friendly and active if you are intrested I would suggest this breed any family that has a nice size yard with kids.

Yes,an australian shepard will protect your family. All dogs have a 6th sence but they are smart when its needed. Not all australian shepards get bored that easy.Mine stays home for a while when my family is gone for 1 to 7 hours but shes just really glad to see us!!!She doesn't act bored at all either

Yes , they can be protective , but at the same time easily distracted. They are working dogs and need a task to do at all times or they can become destructive. As for a 6th sense? No but they are incredibly smart. This is not your average house dog and you shouldn't buy one for that reason.

Tag can make it to the gate in 2.8 seconds. He loves everyone he's met - BUT watch out if you approach me, the car, the house, or anything he thinks is his and he doesn't know you.  Even with people he knows (and he's obedience trained) he can be overly exhuberant with his greeting.

I train animals for a job and I own a 10 month old australian shepherd. She will protect me from anything. You must have a relationship for them to WANT to protect you without being agressive all of the time. Praise them for barking when someone arrives. as far as them being bored they are not constantly bored, give them a ball or one of their toys (NEVER A SHOE!! or they will think that it is ok to chew on your other shoes too!!)they are very good at entertaining themselves. They need to be loved and are very affectionate themselves. I totally reccommend them as a pet.

I think aussies have a 6th sense.  My dog knows where to go when we are walking on our trails in the woods,by my thoughts.  He's quite amazing - I can think him into a room.
I do believe that all dogs/cats etc. have this ability - people are the one's who don't get it.

i have 2 aussies they are great family dogs if you can offer them time. they are not the kind of dog that likes to lay around. they are really smart and are always thinking so you have to keep them busy or give them jobs to do. they can be very protective. i have one that is very submissive to strangers and the other is very weary of strangers till he knows its ok

Most any dog will protect it owner or it's territory. If the owner has a good bond with the animal. And plenty of chew toy's and about an hour a day of god active play like chasing a frizbe or ball. I should be broken up over the day, half hour mourning and evening. but don't get one just for the sake of getting dog. They are demanding!!!!
