One of my babies is doing the same thing at just over a year old.  I took her to the vet, who said we could try some anti-fungal lotion.  There are some tests we could do to culture a skin scraping, etc. but they add up to close to $200 and take 4 weeks to get the results.  The vet suggested we try the lotion and see if that cleared it up.  I think it is called Clonotine.

Please keep this updated on what you find, I will do the same.

Well, she kept losing hair, so last Saturday back to the vet she went.  No fungus was  visible under black light, and a skin scraping for mites was negative.  I have a referral to a vet who is board certified in dermatology.  If he wants to do the 4 week test, I'm going to.  It doesn't seem to cause my baby any distress, but I want to know what's going on, before my Chihuahua starts to resemble a Mexican Hairless, which is a different breed of dog entirely.

Update :

After the skin scraping, I put some triple antibiotic ointment on the area, since to get a good scraping they have to scrape until they get a little bit of blood.  This past week there has not been an increase in the size of the bald spot, and the skin is no longer appearing irritated, as it was the week before.

I'm continuing to monitor the area.

I'm curious to find out what happened with your Chi's skin condition.  I have a 21 month old male who has developed a patch on his thigh about the size of a silver dollar and the hair is rapidly coming off.  I haven't taken him to the vet about it yet.  Did the clonotine work?

I have the same problem with my 1 year old long haired chi. What I have been doing is putting neosporin on the area once or sometimes twice a day. I have to watch him for about an hour after putting it on because he likes to lick it. After the first 2 weeks he had almost all of his hair back! Its a struggle not letting him lick it, but it is worth it.

I have a four month old short hair male chihuahua and he is loosing hair in patches all over his body.  I took him to the vet and they did a skin scrape and it was negative.  He said he doesn't know what is wrong with him.  He suggested for him to take a anti-fungal pill once a week for four weeks.  Has anyone else had this problem?

I am going thought the same thing with my Chihuahua.  We bought her from a pet store when she was just about 12 weeks old.  she is now 7 months old and losing hair in various places on her body.  I'm going to make an appmt with the vet.  Of course I'm very concerned... I was wondering if anyone else has to leave their precious baby alone all day as I do?  I'm wondering if the stress of being alone is what's doing it??

Do any of you have a cat? If so, is you chihuahua getting into the cat food? Sounds like too much protein, get the cat food up, or change chis diet to a low protein one...chances are it is a diet related problem.

I'm also having the same problem with my Chihuahua... a little spot on his shoulder just kept growing.  The vet did a skin scrapping but it just made it worse.  I've noticed his hair on his belly and around his ears seems to be getting thin, too.

Please let me know if you find the cause or remedy.

Thanks!

Chimama ... is there an update. The same thing has been going on with my 7yr old chi for two years now. It seems to get better sometimes and go away ... only to come back again. Ive done the skin scraping at the vet, vet medicated shampoo, anti itch sprays, other medicated shampoos, special food & treats for skin health, anti itch sprays, allergy medications, etc. Nothing is helping. She is still having this problem. I'm afraid to take her back to the vet because it seems like they don't know what is wrong with her anyway. Do you have an update for us?
