I have just acquired an adorable (just 9 week
old)female "Bella".  She is so intelligent and cute but boy has she got attitude! During the day she is an angel but at night she becomes very stubborn.

She is already toilet trained, unbelievable!
But we cannot get her to sleep at night. She wakes at 2.30am and 5.15am.  When awake she will not go back to sleep she cries constantly and will only settle after much ado.  We've been told to ignore her crying and she will finally give in, but after 2 hours of whimpering we cannot stand it anymore - have tried everything, ticking clock, soft bed, toys etc. What should we do?

I know this is not what you want to hear but your sources are right. You need to let her scream until she learns. If you go to her when she yells, then you have just rewarded her for her behavior. Think of it this way, IT may take a month of training but it will save you stress in the YEARS to come. She needs to know that you are the boss and will never waver. If she knows that yelling will NEVER get her ANYTHING then she will learn alot faster. I wish you the best of luck!! Tanisha stanishas@aol.com

We had the same problem when we got our little girl 5 years ago, and we found that not responding to her whimpering/barking made her stop. We eventually put her in another room where we couldn't hear her because of all the sleep we were using. It really worked and she is wonderful today!!!
Good Luck!
