Slainte = health

1. Typical addio (good bye).
2. Cheers, when toasting with a drink

Dia dhuit = God (Dia) be with you

The person who receives this greeting could respond with

Dia is Mhuire dhuit = May God and (is)  Mary (Mhuire) be with you

i have taken in the u.s. gaelic lessons from a gentleman from kerry, slainte means cheers when you are making a toast, why they say that i'am sorry i don't know.  as for Dhia duit it is a gaelic greeting in ireland when you see some one in the street or on the road, it translate in God to You!  and the common reply to this is usually Dhia is Mara Diut! God and his mother to you!  This is the honest truth as i was taught , i would not mislead people i am very much interested in ireland and the people, language, and history . one day i hope to get over there!!  drohegda

i am sorry i was slightly wrong on my posting on 6/8/07 dhia diut does mean God to you it is both a greeting and a gaelic blessing used in Ireland. you can say bail o/ dhia diut meaning blessing of God on you. or my correction from yesterday on the reply is bail o dhia is mhuire duit meaning the blessing of God and Mary on you. Also slainte is a cheer when drinking, or also a blessing meaning  good health to you.  one more thing slainte o dhia diut also means God grant you good health  thank you drohegda.
