This is hard to determine. Dog "periods" are referred to as "being in heat" and while they are in heat is the only time they will allow breeding. Dogs go into heat about twice a year and it can last from several days to about a month depending on the dog. There are basically two stages. The first is "going into heat" which is when the dog is displaying signs of heat but won't breed yet. This can last from 1-21 days. The second is "in heat" which is the stage the dog allows breeding. It can last from 1-17 days. The average for both stages is 9 days. The good news to all this confusion is that, just like with humans, there is a pattern. If she is in heat for two weeks this time, it will be the same next time so count the days to make it easier for you in the future.
One thing I should warn you though. When dogs are in heat they are desperate to be bred and can get depressed if they are not bred. Since she will be miserable if she is not bred and the result of breeding may result in death (because Chi's often have serious complications in labor) it would be easier for you and your dog both if you spray her.  If you have other questions you can contact me at stanishas@aol.com. Bye! Tanisha

I talked to my vet and have a little to add to this answer.... The ammount of time spent actively bleeding can last from 3-5 days to 2 weeks.  Typically speaking, the time is shorter for smaller younger dogs.

Is 8 months too young to go into heat? Why does everyone say it is such a risk to breed chihuahuas?  I was thinking about breeding my angel after her 3rd heat but now I'm a little unsure I would kill myself if she died giving birth

Hello, I have a question for any breeder who can help. I have a 11 month old female chihuahua - 2 lbs. 11oz. I always thought it would be too dangerous to breed her, being so small - even with a smaller male. Anyway, I work at a doggie boutique and had brought her to work with me because she is in heat for the first time and my males are trying to get her booty. Well, a customer came in and was asking if I had thought about breeding her, and I said no because I thought it would be too dangerous. She told me she was a breeder herself for 15 years and that it would be possible to breed her, but she would need to have a c-section scheduled just before the expected due date. Is this common, and how dangerous is it? Thanks.

I think what she meant SPAYING her, so she stops bleeding. =)

My 1 year old Cocker spaniel had her period for about 2 weeks.

I have a teacup chihuahua and she was in heat for 3 weeks, and we did not breed her this time and she was a little down. but we are going to breed her, but the vet suggested to wait for her 2nd heat. So what we did is just gave her a little more attention than normal (as if she doesn't get enough already) and she was just fine. She is a priss and she is a no hair/long hair gray chihuahua!
Her name is Ashe short for Ashley~

Should I use a common garden hose, or is there a specialty item I can buy?

I have a chihuahua also. She's 2 years old. She actually on her period right now and I was wondering how long it would last and what exactly could I do to help her out. I won't allow her to get depressed because she gets too much attention from me. She's been on her period before and she's handled it very well. I do find it interesting that you think a chihuahua is hard to breed and if I don't breed her, she could get depressed. Do you have anymore info on that? If so, please let me know. Thanks!
