My son pierced his labret against my wishes and kept it a secret. I was informed by his high school principle that he was wearing a galvanized nail through it (by the way he did the piercing with a carpet tack) and yes his tetanus shots are up to date. But I still don't think this is safe. He wont listen to me. Can anyone help me out with some information? PLEASE!!!!!

Yes this is extremely dangerous.  Galvanizing is a hot dip process where the nail is coated in zinc.  The coating can (not necessarily will) flake off and become embedded in the piercing.  Also is he is hiding it from you I'm assuming that he is taking his "jewelry" out from time to time when he is at home so that you don't see it.  Labret piercings can take from 4-8 months to heal and the continued trauma of pushing jewelry in and out on a daily basis can make it so that they don't heal at all.  You need to take care of this right away!!!  Take him to a reputable piercer in your area and get a proper piece of body jewelry for his new piercing.  Also make sure that he knows how to clean this piercing since he was stupid enough to do it himself I'm sure he's stupid enough not to know how to care for it.

hey, i did my labret about 3 days ago with a pin, and it is fine.
i don't even have the proper jewelry, though i have had no problem with infections.
i did chip my tooth though while chewing on the pin trying to brake it (i know stupid thing to do).
but if the piercing is looked after proper then it will be fine.
should be cleaned with anispectic and used diluted mouth wash about 3 - 4 times a day.
it's recommend not to take your jewelry out till it is healed between 4 - 8 weeks.

I think the best suggestion yet has been to take him to a proper shop.  He sounds like he's in a rebellious stage and will do whatever he likes so at least you can make him safe and clean even if you can't stop him from piercing it. Talk to him.

I'd let him keep it, get him actual jewelry for it and have him come and ask permission for any further piercings.

i think that the whole nail thing is stupid, but to avoid a conflict (which is garanteed if u try to force him to take it out) just tell him your fine with the piercing so long as he cleans it, and buys a REAL labret ring.. i pierced my own labret a year ago with a big (sterilized) safety-pin, and its never been infected because i clean it... its not dangerous if taken care of... good luck

I just pierced my own labret yesterday. Over the last three years I have had a lot of experience in both piercing myself and others; I have pierced and gauged several peoples ears, both my eyebrows, my ears twice, and now my labret. My labret is the only one I decided to keep after putting in the jewelry. Obviously your son has a lot less, or no experience what-so-ever in piercing. He will learn for himself when it gets infected and he has a scar or hole in his labret for many years to come. The best thing you could do now is get him a real piece of jewelry for the piercing (16 gauge will work fine) and then have him leave it in for at least 4 weeks. Educate him on the various dangers of taking the jewelry in and out continuously over the healing process, and also the dangers of self-piercing. If after four you still don’t want him to have the piercing only then he can take it out. Premature removal of this piercing could cause an infection to grow inside the hole he made after both sides seal shut, which will result in medical assistance and hospital bills. Proper cleaning instructions for this and many other body mods can be found all over the Internet. He should brush his teeth at least three times a day, rinse after EVERY meal with a salt water solution, and wash the piercing with anti-bacterial soap 3-4 times a day. He should also avoid touching or playing with the jewelry for a good three weeks, and whenever he does touch it his hands should have been washed with anti-bacterial soap just beforehand. Good luck, and if you or anyone else need any further advise on the subject don’t hesitate to e-mail me at eric_vs_steve@deal-maker.com

Im 16. i have 17 peircings all ive done myself never once an infection. im not saying its right but the fact your son did it himself shows he cant talk to you about things like that he knows you wouldnt be reasonable. tomorrow im going in to have my tongue pierced professionaly my first time wo0o0o0o!!!!! i really wish more then anything i could have my mom there with me instead of trying to hide it from her as long as possible. here its legal at 16 but i still rather not go behind her back. she would never let me get it done if i asked her permission. your son probly thought the same thing. Nothing you can do really you cant rip it out and you can ground him...but the piercings still there.

no offence but its his body.. im 14 and ive got my eyebrow, my nose (4th time pierced- each time ive done myself), my ears x4.. i did have them x7 (which the other 3 i did myself but i let them heal) im getting my labret done tomorrow hopefully... my mum isnt bothered about this at all because its my body, and ive paid for them myself or whatever.. i think it was pretty stupid how he pierced his labret and what hes got in there but the best you can do really is go to a body place and get it checked out.

Don't worry the best thing you can do is take him to get his pircings done, because its the safest thing to do. I have my tounge and lip pirced, I did my lip my self and my tounge is professional, I also have tattoos, and Im only 17 I wish my mom would be more open to the fact that I want to be me.  Don't worry about him

I agree with Morgana2801 in him/her saying to go to a licensed piercer and get it done there.
I know when I got mine done they went through a
lot of safety issues.

You should NOT use mouthwash like Listerine 4-5 times a day.. that is stupid. If you're going to use it use it twice a day for a maximum 10 days in a row.

Your child should also be tested for turrets and A.D.D as I'mpretty sure he fits into the catergory of both.

okay well i actually just pierced my labret today. i was going to have a friend do it with a professional needle but i got bored at home and couldn't wait. another friend gave me a fourteen gage stud with a flat back to put in it, and i pierced it with a safety pin. i'm fifteen years old btw. i had to keep repiercing it because the stud wouldn't fit but it didn't hurt the first time, it hurt more and more each time though.
i kept the pin in and went to the coffee house to get a smaller sixteen gage from my friend. after sweating, crying, and a while, with the help of friends, i got it in but this one has a stud for the back too, a barbell i guess.
i'm a smoker, yes my mom buys me cigarettes so it's fine, and i just gargle with warm water when i'm done, and after i eat and drink. i don't have anything to keep it super clean except strong mouthwash which burns anyways so it would burn way to harshly for me to use it until i get proper cleaning solution.
my mom was still thinking about letting me do it, but i did it first without her consent. though she would of said yes, she's upset i did it before. even though she was home when i did it and i put a bandade over it so she doesn't have to look at it. she's still mad but hopefully she'll grow used to it.
i say to just encourage your son to get a proper piece to put through it instead of a damned nail. don't punish him, it's his body. but let them know he will have to compromise by maybe making him help out around the house more or something. that's what i'm doing. telling your kids no only makes them want to do it more. and definitely make him clean it after he eats, drinks, or whatever else he does for at least two or three weeks and then he can just clean it regularly i guess.
but if anyone knows any home remedies i can make without having to burn my lip too bad, pleaaase let me know. i don't know how to submit questions on here. thx.

Hello, well, technically speaking that is not safe indeed. It can get infected!
Wow, a "carpet tack"? geez. Did he use ice? or something to numb the pain? and did he use any kind of medicine after piercing it?

Yeah I peirced my labret two days ago with a thumb tack. i bought some surgical steel studs from spencers and did it myself in the bathroom at my cuz's house. my mom didn't notice until easter morning lol. anyway. they arn't as bad as you think. especially if it's a small ball insted of a cone spike. its just a phase . teens now-a-days act on impulse. i suggest you pick up the book "yes your teen IS crazy" from a local libary and tumb through it. its got a lot of good points. anyway my mom was dissipointed in be because she told me i couldn't have it done and i did it anyway. but she already got over it and said it dosn't look half bad. just take sometime and get use to it. he can always take it out and it'll heal up without scaring in a few days.

Listen, all moms freak. I'm 19 years old, and I just got my labret pierced after a long discussion with my mom about it. But if your son is under the age of 18, I would have the principle rip out anything he has in his labret if he sees it and keep antibacterials and such on your sons lip. I waited until I was 19 to get mine done because you really don't know what you want to do in your life until youre older. It wasn't until I knew that I wasn't going to be in a career that would allow facial piercings when I got mine pierced. Your son sounds young and niave to his own life. Also, his piercing can become infected.. And it takes longer than 3 days for an infection to set in. Your son has his future to think about, a lot of places won't even look at him because of a labret ring, and since he did it on his own, with a nickel based needle... It will become sensative to nickel.. and if he continues not to use proper rings/bars, it will form a lump and cause serious scarring.. I know from experience.. My little brother did the exact same thing but with a sewing needle.. Needless to say, he doesn't have it anymore.

To the mother: Make sure he keeps everything out of it, and if you decide to let him keep it... Then you're showing him he can break your rules. Either way, since he's not using any proper tools, it might cause scarring...
