can u counter a brain freeze by preventing the storm ability? Since the in order to have storm the card must be played, and countering means the spell did not play nor triggered.

A triggered ability will put itself on the stack the next time a player would gain priority when its trigger condition becomes true. Storm triggers when a spell with storm is PLAYED. You cant stop storm from triggering unless you have a way to stop a spell from being played in the first place (like meddling mage or something). Once they play the spell with storm, the triggered ability goes on the stack and operates just like any other spell or ability. You would get priority after all this happened, so if you cast a counterspell targeting the spell, this doesnt do anything to stop the triggered ability from resolving. You would need to cast a spell that is capable of countering a triggered ability. The only spell that can really do this is stifle.. so unless you stifle the storm trigger, you cant stop it from resolving.
