It's about 1mm, going past the epidermis into the dermis. If any less than a millimeter, it might leave scratches and wear off, if any deeper it would be extremely painful, and there would be a lot of bleeding.

It has to go thru the top layers of skin into the dermis, which is about an eighth of an inch under the surface, any less, and it may wear away over time, fade very badly, or become scratched... if you go deeper, it can cause unnecessary pain, bleeding of an amount that should not occur, and can also make the tattoo scar more than it should, resulting in a tattoo of very poor quality!

Actually, the reason they do not go so deep is because the fat in your body blurs the ink over time. This is why old tattoos look blurry, as
"back in the day" they used to pump the ink pretty damned deep. Nowadays they do it shallower for this reason. As to do with pain... I think my tattoos were pretty painful anyway... especially the ankle!

I've got 'Keloid' skin, but not a bad case. I really want a tattoo but I dont want to be left with a nasty scar. What should I do? Will a tattoo leave a scar for me?

The best depth depends in part on where the skin is, whether it is over bone or fat, how thick it is, etc.

You can get a lot more information about this from an  ebook "Make a Tattoo Machine, Learn How To Tattoo" at http://www.tmbamall.com/hermitware/tattooing.htm

It's only $10 and it's got a lot of good information, animated diagrams, and photos.

the thing that you have to realize is that the needle will require different depths depending on the skin type for the body part being tattooed but, usually between 1/32 to 3/32 of an inch. the needle will stick out of the tubes different lengths depending on the artist, some like to work from the tips of the needles and some like to use the end of the tube as the guide and let it touch the skin, i find some times this causes more discomfort for the client.

You can make your own tattoo machine from common household items. There is an ebook you can buy with instructions and diagrams and photos, includes heaps of info of what you can use for inks, needles, how to make stencils or transfers, etc.  It's cheap too.

Can you get poisoned if you go in too deep and it starts bleeding? even if the ink isn't toxic... if so.. do you know the symptoms... cause I'mfeeling really exhausted for the past 24 hours even when i took a nap I'mstill very exhausted. as well as nauseous

its just about adjusting the machine so that the needles just penetrate as deep as it has power to do, and then bounce up again, about 1½ mm into the skin resaults to a fine nice looking ,not too painful tattoo that wont make a scar.

i wanted to know if u get diagnosed with spina bifida but its not apparent and u have no back problems if its okay to get a tattoo because the needle wouldn't go deep enough to puncture the spinal cord if it came out of the spine...right?
