I have 3 month old siberian husky named Cub and he is just adorable.  He digs a lot and I know it's common among this breed but he eats dirt, grass, leaves and even chews on mulch.  Is this normal and more importantly, is this safe?

Yes digging is a common problem in this dog. I could see him chewing on mulch as chewing is also their strong suit. And dogs eat grass to aid their digestive system. However I am stumped about the leaves and dirt. I don't think it is dangerous. If you see him sick or something that would be about the only time to worry. After all, dirt has protein! :) I think your dog will be fine. Who knows, it might go away with age too. And one thing that worked with my dogs digging problem was chew toys. That seems to distract them. Well, good luck with your dog! If you need help with training go to http://www.siberianhuskysecrets.com/

One theory as to why dogs eat grass, dirt, etc. is that they are not getting a specific nutrient in their regular diet and are eating other things to make up for it.  Who knows if that's right or not.  I would be particularly vigilent about keeping your puppy away from mulch....especially if it's cocoa mulch made from cocoa beans.  This could have a devestating effect on your little guy.  I'd also be aware of the potential for him to ingest a foreign object that he might dig up or perhaps even chemicals which he might be exposed to from eating the grass or other subastances.  In the meantime take a good look at his food and be sure it's a high quality dog food.  That might be a good place to start.  Another possibility is that he's a bit bored.  Provide him with challenging toys that will occupy his husky head....Kongs are wonderful and if you stuff them with treats that will occupy him for awhile.  It's up to you to distract him from any negative behavior especially if it could harm him.  Good luck!

My 12 year-old Greyhound loves grass a little too much. Often he swallows the longest blades of grass whole and they come out whole. Sometimes he vomits. More often the longs blades get stuck while he's pooping until I pull them out. What a sight it is, me pulling grass out of my dog's ass. A clump of nine-inch blades of grass is not unusual. It happens all the time. No one seems to know what may be missing from his diet that he's compensating for by consuming so much grass. He eats a combination of prescription WD and Trader Joe's, and about 10% of his diet is leftovers (mostly meats, cheese, rice ). What the heck can I do?
