It hurts a little!! I had a lower back tattoo and I thought it was painful but the amount of pain will depend on you as a person. I am 18 and slim which means there is little fat before there is bone making a tattoo more painful for me if u have a lot or more fat then me i would think it wouldn't be that bad! mine took an hour and 15 Min's to do an although it hurt it was bearable and after-wards i forgot the pain and was very happy with my tattoo. its been 5 days today and its healing well but is starting to itch alot which is to do with the scab but its all good news so my bf tells me lol. If you want a tattoo go for it because no matter how painful it is its not for very long and then u have the tattoo for life. to me it felt like a hot burning sensation but as soon as the tattooist stops to refill the pain goes so u can always ask for a brake:)

Okay i just got back from getting my tattoo. It does feel like a hot razor blade cutting into your skin. The filling in didn't really hurt all that bad. My body instantly began to sweat, and i mean i was completely drenched and water was dripping from EVERYWHERE! Also, there were some nerves being hit and it would affect the nerves in the left side of my body like my arm, finger tips, and my knee. It felt like my nerves were being vibrated by something really hot. Right now i'mbleeding pretty bad and i can't take off the bandage until 10 and right now it's 7. I'll update you all in a couple of days and let you know how i'mdoing!!! PEACE

The only part that hurt like hell was the outlining. It feels like a hot razor blade cutting into your skin. The filling in didn't really hurt all that bad. My body instantly began to sweat, and i mean i was completely drenched and water was dripping from EVERYWHERE! Also, there were some nerves being hit and it would affect the nerves in the left side of my body like my arm, finger tips, and my knee. It felt like my nerves were being vibrated by something really hot. Right now i'mbleeding pretty bad and i can't take off the bandage until 10 and right now it's 7. I just got a lower back tattoo yesterday, and it was very painful!!!! It was my first tattoo and I had no idea what it would feel like! Some people said it would hurt, but not bad...others said it was like a burning sensation, or even being stung by a bee, but I have never been stung before, so that didn't help me! Some even said the area would go numb after the first couple minutes, and one of the other customers in the shop actually said it would tickle!! So, I wasn't expecting it to hurt as much as it did...but it hurt like HELL!!! It did not go numb ever, and it was the worst on my sides!!! Everyone said the spine would hurt more, and while the spine areas were painful, the sides were the WORST for me! The whole outlining process was the hardest part. My tattoo is 10" x 4" and very detailed..pretty large for a first tattoo, but I wanted to do it right the first time! Anyway, I have no regrets. It took about 1 1/2 hours, with no breaks, and I can't believe I made it through that pain!!! I guess everyone is different. Maybe to some it is not as bad as for others, but for me it was excrutiating the whole time. But totally worth it!!!

I had my tattoo yesterday, on my lower back. I read some of the comments on this website and got really scared. I knew they would hurt. When i got there to get it done this big guy was having his done on his arm, and he said it was painful and he had to take a break for fresh air 4 times and drink lots of sugary drinks or munch on fruit so he wouldnt pass out. His tattoo took him 2 hours. This scared me alot, i was that close to leaving but my hubby said your here now just try it otherwise youmight regret it... So i build the courage up and sat on the seat to get it done. The artist gave me a test coz i was so scared, she didnt put any ink in the tattoo machine and did her test. I was so suprised it didnt hurt at all. I was expecting to hurt like hell... So i toldher to coninue. I was told my tattoo was going to take 2 hours but because i didnt take any breaks or didnt feel faint or any pain i was done in one hour and 15 mins... Gods honest truth its not as bad as you think it will be. It feels like pins and needles, a more accurate comparision i think it feelslike is an ab belt that tenses your muscles put on a high level. Best thing i ever did. Would def do it again. Anyone who wants one, dont be scared, you'll love it. x

Out of all the places i've been tattooed (arms, stomach, ankles, back) the lower back was by far the most painful. On my first lower back session, I got the outline done and sat for about 2 hours. When I went in a month later to start the coloring, I was shocked at how much more it hurt this time. Usually the outline hurts most because they use a different type of needle and have to push a bit harder, but the coloring/shading hurt way more because the artist basically went over and over on the same spot until it was colored in. The most painful parts of the lower back were down by the ass crack and the love handles. I was always told the area directly above the spine would hurt the most but the love handles were more sensitive. My problem with getting tattooed on the lower back is that it's a very ticklish area, the artist will sometimes lower the needle to your skin and you'll want to jump - not because it hurts but because it's just a naturally sensitive area - its like when someones giving you a back rub and they touch your sides and you jump up a little. If you're getting a small tattoo that will take less than an hour, the pain is very tolerable - yes it hurts but the time will pass quickly enough and it will be over. if you're that worried about pain, the least painful area for myself (and from other people i know) is the upper arms! Ok that's all the input i really have to offer!

Hello everyone! I went to get my first tattoo yesterday for my 19th b-day:)(which was actually on march 1st) on my lower back. But before I got one done, I came here to see what you all were saying about your tattoos. Honestly, getting a tatoo on your lower back does hurt, but it mainly is an uncomfortable feeling w/ a burning sensation! The outlining hurt the least for me anyway, but the filling in hurt the most, the overall hurt came from when he/she moves toward/over the spine. I mean the needle does not actually go into the spine like a spinal tap, but when the tattoo artsist is doing the tattoo across the spine, that is when it really hurts. Really, it did not hurt as bad as I thought it would. My 25 yr. old sister can not take pain like that, and she made a last minute decision to get one on her upper back. Though she did grit her teeth a little, afterwards, she said it did not hurt as bad as she thought it would.Overall, it is worth it! Just take a deep breath, & go for it!!:) Peace&Love

I'm getting a tattoo today for my 17th birthday. Everyone I've talked to said that it is painful but if you just grin and bear it it will all be worth it in the end. Just think your going to have art on your body that you can keep with you for the rest of your life. My dad didn't want me to get it he said "your to young to make a permanent expression on your body" I think your never to young. If you want something on your own body then thats up to you. I would recommend a tat to anyone who believes that expression is an art form. Don't get a tattoo just because everyone else has them and don't randomly pick a tattoo or artist before checking it out and making sure that you want it. Remember it's forever.

I cant take pain that well but i have 2 tattoos and my tongue and nose pierced and i have tattoos on my back by my neck and one on my lower back, and me i say the one by my neck hurt more..ppl told me the one on my lower back would hurt like hell and after i got it done i walked out of there laughing lol..it didn't hurt at all but everyone is different and if u go into a tattoo shop and ask them how much it hurts they will tell u that...well thats what they told me..i don't think it hurt at all and i actually have my tongue pierced and my nose and my nose hurt more than my tongue and both my tattoos..and like what "TAG" said if u cant stand pain and your worried about how much its going to hurt suck it up lol and go with it or don't do it..cuz yea the pain is sometimes worth it but its there forever so think hard lol

I had my first tattoo today - since I wasn't planning on getting more than one I knew I had to face the pain first time and get it done on my back. After reading how much people said it hurts I can honestly say I was terrified. But when the tattooist started I literally smiled because it was nowhere near as bad as I expected and it wasn't really a bad pain...more annoying. I've now got 'Sweet Dreams Come True' written in Chinese, it is about 6inches downwards in length along the bottom of my spine. The part surrounding the spine didn't hurt, but when the needle was actually in the center on my spine is was more painful. But definitely don't hesitate because of the pain factor, its nothing compared to the extremity in your own head. Go for it!

I got my first tattoo on my lower back about a year ago - it's of my daughter's name and can still remember the pain clearly! Although it was bearable, it seemed to go on for a lot longer than it did and got quite sore as the 'fleshier' parts of my back were done. I did make a big fuss about the pain as it was being done, although like most things, the pain was forgotten about once it was all over. Having said that though,I've always been a bit of a baby when it comes to pain; it took me a week to muster up the courage to get my tongue pierced which was completely pain free. But tattoos are well worth the pain and are on your body forever - just try not to think about the pain and get it over with!

let me say i must represent the "big gurls" in the house...i am 29 and about 240 lbs..i have a lower back piece..black tribal with swirls and hearts..really kool its about a 8x6 inch piece and i have never experienced pain like that before in my life...i have 3 other tats..2 on my shoulder blade and one on my calf..and have been thru UNMEDICATED NATURAL child birth twice and the tat on my lower back hurt more than ANY of it...mine took 2 and 1/2 hours non stop..so i dont think the "more fat less pain" holds up...lol but i love it i love the pain i have multiple piercings and they are awesome too..so for the big gurls out there...go for it as long as they are for you....!

Everyone has a different pain threshold and there are many different factors that influence the amount of pain felt when getting a tattoo. If the tattoo is on the bone, it will hurt worse, or on a sensitive area. Areas such as your ankle hurt less, while right on the shoulderblade (i have a rather large butterfly there) or in the groin or pubic area hurt worse. My lowerback tatty is quite large with many colours, and although it goes across my spine, I would have to say that the most painful part is the sides where you have more fat, due to the fact that the skin is more sensitive here, and you have more fat. With more fat, the artist has to go deeper so the ink does not smudge or get a feathered look. It is painful, but bearable. Imagine someone taking a fishing hook and dragging it through your skin. It sounds bad, but thats about how it feels. But you can stand it, and you will because your desire to get that tattoo is stronger than the pain, and the pain will only last a few hours.

I got my second tattoo today. My first was 6 months ago which is 4 chinese symbols that go down my spine, that didn't really hurt much except when it was directly in the center of the spine and the outline hurt much more than the colouring in. My second today is a butterfly on my hip and it hurt like a b***h, I was persuaded to get it on my hip instead of my stomach because apparantly the pain is less but it still hurt way more than my back. I wasn't really worried about the pain this time because my spinal tattoo was fine...if only I'd have known in advance about the hip lol. But yeah my butterfly is cute, black and majenta with swirly detail coming from the wings...Tattoos hurt a little but they're worth it in the end. As for the question above, I thikn getting your bellybutton pierced and getting a tattoo are different kinds of pain, piercings are more blunt and direct pain, whereas tattoos are more of a hot scratching which does take longer but the pain tends to go away much faster when its finally complete.

well im 15 years old and my ma and dad said i can have a tattoo in the 6 week holidays (in lyk 3months) but now they said i can get it dun this week!so im realli stuck as i want a lower back tattoo,i have always wanted this done,i only want a black one done,i want a pattern goin across my lower back,something 2 look nice but im hoping it wont hurt that much as im not that good with pain!ive had my bellybutton peirced which didnt hurt that much only a slight pinch,and ive had my nose peirced which hurt the same,but that was over in a matter of seconds,but as people are telling me it will go on for about an hour :( i dont know what 2 do!:S as im realli stuck on what to choose!should i just get it done or should i wait?but i think to myself if i wait im still going to think the same (i hate pain etc) so i realli want it done this week,im going on holiday at the end of this week too so i want it done before then.please wb ppl and tell me what 2 do :S and say how much it reali does hurt,my cousin had hers done a few months ago and shes the same age as me and she is really small and slim and she said it didnt realli hurt,and her design is lyk the same 1 i want,wb plz xxx

Well girls and boys I recently got a lower back tattoo to celebrate my 50th. It was something I always wanted to do. At my age, the question of permancy certainly was not an issue. Just as most of you mention, it really did hurt like hell and at times I had to literally bear down and hold my breath to get through it. The tattoo artist referred to me as "one tough lady." It took exactly an hour (no stops) and the tattoo runs across my lower back. The part that hurt the most was the outline, particularly around the love handles. The shading in was a piece of cake compared to the outline. I am 4 feet 10 inches and weigh 106 lbs, so I am not very big. Judging from the feedback on the other responses, most people agree that lower back tattoos are indeed painful. I went back two days later and got a pair of running shoes tattooed on my shoulder blade. I'm a marathoner, so it was an appropriate choice. Not much pain there. The artist commented that "he had created a monster." Yes, tattoos really are addicting. I have in mind to get a couple more.

hey guys.girls. well im 16 and im considering getting a tattoo i have been looking upon many websites and i have came to the decision that i want a butterfly design whether thats a single butterfly or a tribal one. im torn where to have it either the lower back or my pelvic area, i was jst wondering from ppls past experience what hurts the most, as i cant say im the bravest of ppl and i cant stand pain hehe, which sounds silly because i want a tattoo and i know it will hurt, as i was with my boyfriend last week and i saw everything. so if someone could answer my question i would be very grateful, also does any one know of any decent websites which has buttefly designs that are NICE and not TACKY! thanks x

Tattoos hurt like hell. I got my first on on my lower back and i passed out and throw up and that was just the first sitting. They were only able to have the outline. So a week later I went back for more of the worst pain I have ever had. I would rather have 20 more kids then get another tattoo. But I have to finish... I didn't pass out or throw up the second time put I was close a couple times and had to have him stop. I guess you would say that I can NOT handle pain. Even knowing I had a child with no medican and I was just fine. I would recommend that you get a little one first. To see how much pain you can handle before you get one across the whole lower back. And yes the spine hurts the most....

The spine is the killer and your body jolts. I am very slim with not much fat. They will tell you not to move. It is normal for the spine to react this way. Like tapping your knee with a hammer and it jolts. Near the love handles(the more fleshy area) is bothersome too. Just focus in on something...like a picture on the wall. Mine to almost 2 hours. I am not going to sweet coat this for the teenagers...some spots are tender while getting them done on the back. I got my belly button done awhile ago and the pain is up there with that. Just be sure to follow the artists instructions on care. Be also cautious of red pigment as it can cause a allergic reaction

yes it hurts like hell! dont get confused people who are like blah blah the tat on my arm was nothing...my bro has on arms and leg and describes them having felt like scratching my back was NOT like this its feels like a butning knife cutting into you but they did stop every now and then to spray with cold water or watever it was . AHHH so nice. im not trying to scare you just prepare you because i went into after having tongue peirced previously wich people said would hurt and it didnt really hurt at all so come the tattoo i thought it wouldnt be to bad but it was! lower back is worse esp if like me you have it ded on your spine! there are so many nerves my back was seriously twitching i couldnt help it . i didnt cry though woo! just alot of teethe gritting , gripping the chair and making grrrrr noised through clenched teeth. iv even spoke to some women who said it hurt more than when they had a baby, so you do the maths!!! yes it hurts..was it worth it?..hell yeah!

well I had a lower back tattoo 2 days ago, and it def. hurts... i did not cry but i was about to, i am 17 and i weigh 120 pounds... we (i mean girls) tend to accumulate fat in our lower back sides,and thats why it usually hurts more, but also my tattoo was fairly big... it took the guy 4 hours and a half to get it done... and mine had a lot of shadings and its fully colored.... i had 4 hors of torture.. but it was worth it.. because well i drew my tattoo i designed it and i wanted it in my skin for the rest of my life.. marking a stage i went through in life.. and well i went to the best place here in Ecuador and i got it done just as i wanted i am very happy with it and I'm taking care of myself as i don't want it to be sore.... your muscles hurt a lot the next few days.. i hope this pain stops soon because i feel as if i ran a marathon or something.... but the tattoo doesn't itch at all or hurt.. just the muscles because of the contractions produces by the reaction of the nerves on the body when the needles touch your skin..... it hurts but its def. a pleasurable result!!!! i would never regret it!!! go for it!! its worth the pain!!!!

Always be sure to tell your tattooist about any physical problems you may have, as this will help the outcome of your tattoo. The best thing to do to find a unique design is to find something you like and take it to your tattooist and if he or she is good, they will be able to trick the design out, giving you a unique tattoo that no one has. The thing is to let you tattooist know you want in order to alter the design you have provided.

anyone who says that tattoo's don't hurt are lying, ive been tattooing now for over 20 years and about 0.001% of the people didn't appear to be in pain, nearly my whole body is covered (except my hands and head) and every one of them hurt, some more than others. the pain is bearable though. Most painful places are your back, chest, and under you upper arm. Your foot is the most painful by far. For someone with a small 1 hour tattoo to say it doesn't hurt does not count. It still hurts but a proper tattoo means sitting their for a few hours. Trust me when i say this for people looking to get inked, it hurts, but is bearable and also the greatest relief when over. Don't drink before hand and do not take paracetomol or any other painkillers, they only thin your blood and will make you bleed. Best of luck to all those thinking of getting a tat done, you will be ok, just take deep breaths and you won't pass out

Anyone who says tattoos dnt hurt is obviously chattin sht!I had my first tattoo when i wuz 17,it's a lil bird wiv a rose on my right shoulder blade,it's quite big.That really did hurt...feels like someone's slowly slicing thru your skin with a blade...but it is worth it! i love my tattoo n im now gettin anuva on Sat.Yeah it hurts but if u rly want one done then it's def worth the pain!a little bit of pain for a lifetime of tattoo!:D Ignor the pain-dnt fink of it...go2sleep if u hav2!or just talk!anything u do wil take ur mind off it!well good luck anybody who's goin out 2 get ya 1st tattoo!Remember it hurts-but it's down 2 u if u can handle the pain or not!Good luck ppl...take care xoxoxo

no it doesn't, well not much i have a picture of my mother there and it was only a wee bit when they started. does any one know if it hurts when you get your penis tattooed or if it has to be erect when it is being done?

I got a lower back tattoo yesterday, and I'd say it hurt like hell. I wasn't expecting much pain to be honest, and I'm pretty good when it comes to pain, but it was honestly awful. It's a rather large tattoo and took a few hours which is why it hurt so bad, but a smaller tattoo in that area is smarter if you're bad with pain. It honestly feels like a hot razor blade scraping the heck out of you, but I don't regret doing it. It was painful, but what do you really expect? It is a tattoo.

I got my first tatt a fully blown tribal design all by free hand so its a bit different about 2 month ago still got alot of colouring ive got all of my right arm covered half my chest and half my back, big for a first tatt but after the first bit i went mad and asked for the whole lot can honestly say im an addict now.. It didnt hurt me at all but i know some people really feel it.. its ya own personal thing to be honest, its just like being scratched by a cat or summin.. not that bad.. but definatly an experience for the first time.. go for it..

about the penis tattoo, don't listen to the other guy (Mick)"apparently" he dosn'thave 1. I do I have flames tattooed on the head of my penis that are colored in red and orange. Let me tell you, YES it hurts but the pain goes away almost instantly when your done. It's just a little tender for the next few days. It's so worth it if your thinking about doing it and anyone you show just thinks your nuts! It's great

I've got quite a few tattoos already but I got my first lower back tat 2day. I've got to say it hurt like a motherf****r. Apparently men have more more nerve endings in their lower back than women and let me tell you, I think it may be true. I wouldn't put anyone off getting this area done as I couldn't be happier with mine, I got my 5 day old daughter's name in Celtic letters all the way over my lower back and it's breath taking......GO FOR IT!!! I'm getting a lower back tattoo in 18 more days. I'm not quite sure exactly what I want, I want to be sure because it's permanent.. but I'm wondering if anyone knows some good sites to look for lower back designs and tribals? Please help me out if you can. I've been looking for a while now and time's running out! Haha. As far as the pain goes though, I'll be able to handle it. I already have MANY parts of my body pierced. What the hell will a tattoo really feel like? Just some more pain, piece of cake.. haha! I love it*

Bull! Tattoos do hurt. Anyone who tells you that they don't are full of it. Yes some people may say it didn'thurt "that" much and it does depend on the person, but they hurt. They are breath taking at times, the pain is more annoying and uncomfortable rather then a "tearing" pain. Tattoos are worth the pain though! Advice...take awhile to decide what you really want and don't just pick one off the wall. It's forever.

i had a tattoo on the my lower back yesterday a celtic design it doesnt feel like needles its just feels like burning. i cant take pain at all. but it was no where near as bad as i was expecting.

I just got back from getting a tribal heart with wings on my lower left back and it didnt hurt at all when they start it doesnt hurt the only part that hurts is shading it feels like a cat scratching you but besides that it really is nuttin i am 19 and 117 pds so if i took it ne one can lol

I have got a large tattoo around my left leg and I will admit that it does hurt but most of the time it is a nice pain but sometimes it really hurt(such as the muscle(i have skinny legs)). I am getting the top part of my back tattooed in a couple of days time and I am going to go in there expecting the same pain, if not more because if you expect a real bad pain then it will normally be better. PAIN IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL THING!get lots of tattoos everyone!

wel i'm a 16 year old girl, and i have a heart on my pelvic area, that didnt hurt, i also have a rose round my ankle- which hurt a fair bit. I had a chinese symbol on the top right of my back and thats was in my mind the one that hurt the least, i also have a large tribal band with a butterfly in the center at the bottom of my back, now i hate pain and that hurt but i just kept thinkin how lush it will look after it has healed. Tattoos are soooo adictive,dont you think?? Any ideas for another one? I'm going tomorrow to have two paw prints on my boobs, will write more after that. xx Totally recomend tattoos

I really enjoy it. Yes it does hurt in some areas but by and large it is more boring over a period of several hours than painful.

I'm going to get a tattoo on my lower back on the 5th. It's my 18 birthday Wednesday and i decided that i absolutely have to get it! In case anyone out there is still wondering how bad it hurts i will certainly update this Wednesday right after i get my tattoo, and I'm not going to sugar coat the truth either! LMFAO

I am 29 years old and have many large tats on various parts of my body. The most recent one is a large tribal bird very low on my back, I will not lie this particular tat hurt so bad at points that I got the sweats and thought I might throw up...mostly it killed on my spine by my tail bone where there is solid black coloring. The only other one that I remember being uncomfortable was my stomach..but even that wasn't as bad as the lower back.

I'm 16 and am getting a tat for my 17th birthday. Can't wait! I have a friend who got a tat on her lower back and she said that it did'nthurt all that much ,just the filling in part. And "carrie" no one is too fat to get a tattoo. Just as long as you are doing it for you and no one else. HOLLER

I got my name in Hindi last week. I hurt a bit but not that much. I think it was worth the pain. I have a very high pain threshold anyway.

I have my lower back done and it hurt a little. I have a butterfly with tribal. I do not take pain well and it was nerve raking in the beginning but it gets better. It burns-at the end it is well worth it!

I have a daisy arm band on my right arm. When I went to get it I had every intention of getting a lower back tattoo but I was scared and the guys were all telling me to do the arm band because it was less painful. To my surprise it didn't hurt at all!! So a year later I still wanted my lower back tribal so I went back and made myself do it. Yeah it hurt a little, but everyones pain tolerance levels are different. For me it was a piece of cake!!! :) My next tat will be a skeleton gecko on the top of my left foot. I've already drawn it up and its gonna be soooo cute. TTFN

i have a tattoo just below my left hip of a tribal butterfly. to any1 who is thinkin of gettin 1 it does hurt at the begining wen the outline is being done but after that the pain is bareable,iv been told mine hurt because of where it is as its such a sensitive area,so anyone who is gettin 1 on lower back my mate got 1 yesterday and said there ain't nothin 2 worry about! so go 4 it!!! xxx

I had my lower back tattoo done 3 days ago. I was quite nervous waiting for the bloke to come and call me in and the initial sitting on the chair waiting for him to start was a bit nerve wracking but although the outline hurt somewhat the filling in didnt really hurt at all, and it only took about 20 minutes too so it was over in no time. It didn't hurt at all once I left, at some points that evening I even forgot I'd had it done coz there was no pain at all, it was red for about 30 minutes but that soon went away.
