my son was diagnosed with early onset strep b, a spinal tap was done which if i remember correctly turned up negative.he was none the less in intensive care for about 10 days on antibiotic.he is now my 4 and a half year old pride and joy with no apparent side affects.i have heard about side effects such as hearing and vision loss, ect. i actually have two questions. first can these side effects come on years down the road ? and lastly, what are the side effects of the antibiotics that where given ? im not sure what they where but i no he is not allergic to penicillin.

My son was diagnosed with late onset group B and we have now switched pediatricians and discovered many things.  But to your question about the medicine.  There is an antibiotic and I am not sure how to spell it correctly but it is called gentomyocin and it can cause hearing loss and we were never told this. My son has had a hearing test and passed and passed all of the hearing tests initially at birth.  So for your piece of mind I would have your child's hearing tested if you are concerned.  As far as the vision if your son had meningitis associated from the group b I would continue to have his vision and hearing  monitored throughout the years.  I am not a doctor, just a very concerned mother who will continue to seek answers.  Good luck and God Bless.

in response to this i will say that i was born with strep-b and i did suffer some learning problems due to the medications but i was in severe condition and wasn't supposed to learn anything. all i suffer from now is currently minor vision and hearing problems and thats about all.
