Adolf Hitler was certainly not the cause of WW1 considering he didn't come to power until the 30's, and during WW1 he was nothing more than a grunt in the German army.

Willis, shutup.

Hitler was in fact alive and well in WW1, however he was not the cause of the Great War.

The Great War started in 1914 due to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by the "Black Hand", a Serbian nationalist secret society.

Hitler was born around the time of ww1 of course but he didn't cause the war but he was eager to fight for Germany because he thought he would for once show the world how superior Germany is compared to the rest of Europe. He joined the army and would love to impress his fellow soldiers by volunteering for dangerous tasks. He was later on blinded by a gas attack and sended off to a hospital. in that time, Germany surrended and Hitler went into deep depression. He blamed it all on the Jews, saying how they didn't really help out.

Triple alliances and Austrio-Hungary's fear of losing slav's in Austria prompted them to go to war with Serbia (the assasination of Ferdinand was just an excuse for them, they were looking to do it for a long time). This caused a domino affect where everyone became involved.

The 3 main things that caused WW1 were:
•   The Assasination of Archduke ferdinand
•   The rise of Nationalism
•   The building up of the Military and Aliances

Europe avoided major wars in the 100 years before World War 1 began. In the 1800's, an idea swept across the continent that helped bring about the Great War.It was Nationalism - the belief that loyalty to a person's nation and its political and economic goals come before any other countrie's During the 1800's nationalism became popular for the people who shared a common language, history, or culture. They began to view themselfes as supirieor. Nationalism led to the creation of two new powers:Italy and Germany. through the uniting of many small states. War had a major role in achieving nation strength in Italy and Germany. But also nationalism weakened the eastern European Countries of Austria,Hungary, Russia, and Turkey. They ruled many national groups that urged for independence. The Balkan Peninsula or the "Powder Keg of Europe" because tensions there threatened to start a major war. Rivalry for control of the Balkans added to the tensions that erupted into World War 1.

Building Military strength occurred among European countries before World War 1 broke out. Nationalism encouraged public support for military buildups and for a country's use of force to reach its goals. By the late 1800's, Germany had the best trained army in the world. In 1898 Germany began making a naval force that was big enough to challenge the British navy. In 1906, the British navy launched the Dreadnought, the first modern battleship. The Dreadnought had greater firepower that any other ship of its time. Germany rushed to construct on just like it. Advances in technology helped aid in making military forces stronger. Machine guns and other new weapons fired more accurately and more rapidly that earlier weapons. By the end of the 1800's, technology enabled countries to fight longer and bear greater losses that ever before.

A Group of Alliances gave European powers
a sense of security before World War 1.They formed these alliances with eachother for protection and to guarente that other members of the alliance would come to the country's aid if attacked. Although alliances provided protection, the system also created certian dangers. If war came, the alliance system meant that a number of nations would fight, not only the two involved in a duspute. Alliances could force a counry to go to war against a nation it had no quarrel with. In addition, the terms of many alliances were kept secret. The secrecy also increased the chances that a county might guess wrong about the consequeneces of its actions. The Triple Alliance was made up of 3 countries, Germany, Italy, and Austria. They all agreed to go to war if attacked by Russia. Bismarck also brought Austria and Germany into alliance with Russia. The agreement was known as the "Three Emperor's League" and it was formed in 1881. They all agreed to remain neutral if any of them went to war with another country. In 1890 when Bismarck left office it gave a chance for Russia and France to form an alliance. In 1894, France and Russia agreed to call up troops if any naiton in the Triple Alliance mobilized. Russia and France also agreed to help eachother if either were attacked be Germany.

Beginning of the War On June 28, 1914 Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist named Gavrilo Princip. The Archduke's assassination triggered the outbreak of World War 1. On July 28 Austria declard war on Serbia. Because of Austria's alliance with Germany, Serbia try to get help from Russia. In 1914 Russia vowed to stand behind Serbia, but first Russia gained support from France. Germany declared war on Russia on Aug. 1, 1914, in response to Russias mobilization. Two days later Germany declared war on France. The German Army swept into Belgium on its way to France. The invasion of Belgium caused Britian to declare war on Germany on August. Germanys plan for a quick defeat of France while Russia slowly mobilized was called the "Schlieffen Plan". This plan called for two wings of the German army to crush the French army in a pincers movement. A small left wing would defend Germany alongs its frontier with France. A much larger right wing would invade France through Belgium, close in and capture Paris, and them move east. Belgiums army fought bravely but held up the Germans for only a short time. By August 16,1914, the right wing of Germany could begin its pincers motion. It drove back French and British forces in southern Belguim and swept info France. But instead of swinging west around Paris, one part of the right wing pursued retreating French toops toward the Marne River. This maneuver left the Germans exposed to attacks form the rear.

Meanwhile, General Joseph Joffre, commander of all French armies, stationed his forces near the Marne River east of Paris and prepared for battle. This battle was later known as the "First Battle of the Marne", beginning on September 6 and ending September 9 when German forces started to withdraw. The First Battle of the Marne was a key victory for the Allies because it ended Germanys hopes to defeat France quickly. The German army halted its retreat near the Aisne River. From there, the Germans and the Allies fought a series of battles that became known as the Race to the Sea. Germany sought to seize ports on the English Channel and cut off vital supply lines between France and Britian. But the Allies stopped the Germans in the First Battle of Ypres in Belgium. The battle lasted from mid October until mid November. By late November 1914, the war reached a deadlock along the Western Front as neither side gained much ground. The deadlock lasted nearly 3 ˝ years.

Simply, the cause of WWI was Germany's rapid rise in power. It became unified, thus isolating France. Competition was growing quickly. Hence, a major clash in the two main factors of WWI: IMPERIALISM AND NATIONALISM.
You guys, please try to keep in mind that the National Socialist Party (who eventually put Hitler into power) was the very beginning of the Nazis who vastly grew in popularity because of Germany's fear of communism. Hitler was so willing to fight for Germany as a response to his hatred of the stipulations imposed on the nation by the Peace Settlement of 1919. This was what won him his support. And, come on, if you guys have done any reading, you would know that one of the MAIN reasons for Hitler's hatred of the Jews was merely that Marx was a Jew.

Militarism, people thought their armies with high quality and didn't trust other countries, Economic rivalries of needing more raw materials for their country. Alliance system breakdown to separate back the countries of countries that have been conquered. At this time some nations wanted world power so they teamed up with other countries and war started. Hitler did not cause WWI. Gavrilo Princip is the closest to a scape-goat we have. When he assasinated Archduke Ferdinand, of the Austia-Hungerian Empire, whom Germany backed, for the cause of Serbian sovereignty. Hitler was in WWI, he loved war. He threw himself into battle and relished the oportunity to practice unrestricted murder. The Treaty of Versailles ended WWI, so it could not be the cause. It was, however, a major rallying point for Hitler. The treaty's castratoin of Germany left many Germans bitter and ready to follow a powerful leader, who would return them to the glory they had for less than fifty years, before WWI.

hitler was definatly not responsible for ww1. it can be argued that he was the main cause of ww2 along with the treaty of versailles. the event that triggered ww1 was the assination of the austrian archduke in serbia. this gave austria justification to go to war with serbia although they would not have declared war if germany had not given austria a blank cheque. this brought all of the other countries into war because of the alliance systems that were supposed to keep peace. even if the archduke had not been assinated war would have broken out in europe because of a building of tensions between the major powers.

Yes we all know Hitler was not the cause of WWI, but he was a soldier during WWI. For all of you that did not know he was approximately 1/4 Jewish because his grandmother was Jewish. Supposedly his grandmother was very mean to his mother and that is one reason he hated the Jews. A fact that i liked is that he wanted to be an artist and he applied to an art school but they said he was the worst artist they had ever seen so that is why he stole paintings while on his crusades when he was killing the jews...so he was just a guy that didn't get the childhood he wanted so he took it out on the Jews!

Philip guvrille killed duke Ferdinand and his wife.  caused some country(Austria-Hungary i think) to go to war with some other country, which caused the whole ally system to begin. So it was Austria-Hungary and Germany against britain, France and Russia.  Germany didn't want to be in the war but because of the "blank checks" for help in war, they had to.  Hitler was only a soldier in the war.  didn't do anything significant in the war.  PERIOD.

Hitler was a message boy in ww1, his job was to run between trenches and give orders to the other soldiers, which erned him a medal of bravery. Evidence has been found that adolf hitler was a part of the german "super soldier" operation, meaning he was injected with a primative form or methane phetamine (Crack, cocain, speed etc)
He was the leader of the nazi political party, and he used mostly intimidation to get to his position, but he also appealed to the public as a man who would right the wrongs of the treatys dictated to them. once in a position of power adolf hitler used vioence and cheep scheming to get the austrian nazi party more power, to get ready for an anschluss, meaning he wanted to make germany and austria one country. this was forbidden, and was one of the causes of ww2. adold hitler was no more than a message boy on speed in ww1.

No, Hitler was not the cause of the Great War, but he was alive. He was actually appointed to be in command of something (not sure what) by the leader of Germany at the time.

The Main causes of WW1 or also know as the Great War was because of the following reasons:

The Murder of Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife. Which Austria Hungary blamed Serbia for the assassination and declared war on the Serbia. Then Russia, itself a Slavic nation, mobilized it's army to support Serbia. Then Germany supporting Austria- Hungary declared war on Russia and France. France then in response declared war on Germany. Then Belgium joined in on the war because they were attacked by Germany, which was apart of the German plan called the Schlieffen Plan. When Germany invaded Belgium, a nation that Britain had promised to protect in a treaty signed almost a century before, Britain declared war on Germany. Since Canada was not a full independent country, but part of the British Empire, so Britain’s Declaration of war meant that Canada was at war too.
And so started the Great War.

But the other MAIN reasons for the war starting was

Militarism
Alliance System
Imperialism
Nationalism

The Main cause of WW1 or also know as the Great War was because of the following reasons:

Imperialism
Nationalism

Hitler was not the cause of world war one. He was how ever the reason for world war 2.
WW1 was caused by… a lot of things
1.   The assassination of the Austria-Hungary prince was the spark but there was a whole big deal to it.
2.   France wanted revenge, because Germany and France had a war in which France lost. France took this and teamed up with Britain.
3.   Germany wanted to grow and expand it self like Britain.
4.   the top countries were afraid that if Germany expanded then it would be a threat to The top countries…
Etc… jeez I could go for ever… and When Hitler was in power any one who was gay was drenched in water and left outside in the cold for an hour… this killed the gays.
And if Hitler’s group did that then why would Hitler be gay???
Next time check the facts!!!
Got told by a 14 year old sad I tell you!!!

ur stupidy as a whole is very bold.  many of u seem like u are guessing on who or what started ww11.  how many of u have every heard of the thirty years war.  that was or after that war europe was split into alliances.  they did this to ensure a balance of power.  these alliances held together up  untill ww11 when they had to defend each other.  when that happen the alliances got soo big that there was no choice but for the would world to go to war.  now at this time (ww11)  we (the us) had a position not to get into European wars our business was with the America's. we didnt want to get involved and we relly didnt know what side to take.  so we stayed out of it till had to get involved.

The cause of WW1 was the assassination of the heir to the austrio-hungarian throne (Archduke Ferdinand). The assassin was part of a group of serb Nationalist trying to change the leadership of there country. By chance while on a formal visit to Sarajevo the Archduke's driver took a worng turn and ended up on a road where Gacrilo Princip (a Serb Nationalist) was walking. Princip pulled out his pistol, killed the Duke, and sparked WW1 witch lead to WW2 and the death of millions and millions of people around the world.  Many other things also lead to the war but if Princip had not taked that shot things may turned out a little different

hitler was not the cause for one simple fact that in the great war hitler was on the front lines fighting as a grunt.

and any puts that thinks hitler was gay should be shot hitler killed gays in ww2 and was married to Eva Braun for the last part of his life and before then she was his mistress.

actually if u think about it ww1 was the cause of hitler in ww2 with out Britain and france being money grubbing asses the germans would have never ben blamed and there economy would have still ben stable there for hitler would not have gotten the support of the workers and would have had no power to start his campaign in ww2 in the first place.

Hitler was a sniper called the black dog of Ypres during ww1. He moved between lines alone on night and was so feared among english soldiers that eventually they put a price on his head. Hitler sniped 32 officers including couple generals and 14 unterofficers and privates. Hitler was a corporal during ww1 so i dont think a corporal can start a war alone. And hitlers birthday was 20.4.1889.

Imperialism, nationalism, and industrialization ignited WW1, plus the assasination of Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo.  Hitler was just a soldier for Austria-Hungary during this time, creating a mindset towards what a fascist belief is.

what a ridiculous question! World war 1 can actually be viewed as the cause of Hitler's later mentality.

He was an honest soldier, inspired to extremism by the disappointment of defeat.

However, considering his age at the start of the war, and his rank: corporal... how could he have had any influence?

I do not think that Hitler was the cause of WW1. This is because that he wasn't directly involved with the decision to have war, (however, he was a soildier), and the party that should be responsible should be all the countries that fought for power. The  assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was just an excuse to enter war. All these countries just wanted expansion. They were all looking around to find reasons. The assasination of the Archduke was just the right thing at the right time for all these power and land hungry nations.

The treaty of Versaillis was not even established at that time.

The long-term origins to World War One start back in 1870 with the Franco-Prussian War. In the Franco-Prussian war France lost to Germany which lead to the two countries never being in an alliance with one another. Once the war was over it lead to the forming of the triple Alliance which was one of the main alliances during the first world war. The Triple alliance was made up of the countries - Germany, Austo-Hungery and Italy, and it was first formed because Germany needed help to guard Alsace-Lorrain from France as France wanted to get back its stolen land.
Another of the long-term origins to World War One was Weltpolitic. Weltpolitic was a policy Kaiser Wilhelm the second, who believed that Germany had a right to become a global imperial power and should develop an army and navy to support its colonial objectives. Kaiser Wilhelm's personality and his policy of Weltpolitic were seen as contributing to international tensions. The policy lead Germany to construct a huge navy which lead to domestic problems as the navy cost heaps, It also lead into the start of the Boer wars and the Morrocan Crisis. Many Historians have said, 'Weltpolitic was only a half-hearted policy' (Paul Schroeder), and that it was only inviting the other countries to go to war. Fritz Fischer argued that - 'Germany provoked war and ensured that compromise was impossible in order to achieve Weltpolitic, to economically dominate central Europe, to create an colonial empire and to solve its own internal political and economic problems'. Fischer was an Historian that believed that the majority of the responsibility for the Start of the war relied in Germany.
Another of the long-term origins to World War One was the Morrocan Crisis of 1905 and 1911. In the crisis of 1905 the Kaiser went to Morocco to say he wanted Morocco to be independent, but the French were furious that he should suggest such a thing and they went to a meeting with German officials in Algeciras. From this meeting the Kaiser was embarrassed as his views for Morocco were rejected. In 1907 Britain and France formed an alliance with Russia and was called the triple entente, this was another of the major alliances in the First World War. In the Crisis of 1911 France tried to take over Morocco and to this the Kaiser held another meeting in which France got to take over Morocco and Germany got some land in central Africa.
Another of the long-term origins to World War One was the Balkan wars. The Balkan wars were two consecutive wars among the various countries of the Balkan Peninsula. The first Balkan war in 1908, saw Austria take over the provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Russia and Serbia were not to happy about this bit they backed down when they found that Germany was on Austria's side, One problem was that this gave a lot more confidence to Austria. Later in 1912 there were small Local wars in which Serbia was seen as the most powerful country in the Balkan's, Austria could not handle this and they decided that Serbia needed to be dealt with all they needed was a good excuse. The Third Balkan War started with the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife while they were in Sarajevo. It considered as the war that had gone terribly wrong as it is said that the third Balkan war was World War One.
The main Cause to World War One was Militarism, which include the Arms Race and the Schlieffen Plan. Arms Race was a race to build the biggest Army and Navy and Airforce for the Battle ahead. All countries except Britain and Germany were trying to Build the biggest army anyone had every seen where as Britain and Germany were trying to Build up there navy as Germany wanted the Biggest navy so as to beat Britain. In Germany they had a small army but people said that it, Even though one of the smallest, It was the best trained and most powerful out of all armies involved in World War One. In 1900 Russia had the biggest army with 1.1 million but by 1914 it had lost half a million to be an army of 0.8 million, all other countries except Britain had gained a bigger army. Count Alfred von Schlieffen created the Schlieffen plan and it was a plan that was supposed to protect Germany from fighting the war on two fronts. People were told that - 'Under this plan they would quickly attack and defeat France, then turn their forces on Russia which would be slow to get its troops ready for war' (Modern World History, P9). This Plan was a Failure to Germany as it had many Flaws, For example - Britain was not brought into the Equation and France was stronger than what they expected.
Other causes to World War One include Imperialism, Nationalism and Territorial disputes. Imperialism took place in Germany after 1870, which caused an immense increase in the manufactures of the country and a conquest need for markets. Between 1898 and 1914 the economic rivalry in Africa concerning the countries France, Great Britain and Germany almost predicted the out break of World war one as They were arguing over territory, what should be who's. Nationalism was the resulting idea that people of the same ethnic origin, language and political ideas had separate states. In 1871 nationalism took place on Germany making it a independent state and making Germany involved in the tensions of other independent states in Europe, which lead to the start of World War One. Territorial disputes was also an ongoing problem between many states and countries as the leaders of the places wanted more land and didn't know who owned what as land was being taken all the times.
Historians have been debating the causes of World War One Since 1914. Some like Fischer, Berghahn, Albertini, Geiss and Taylor all believed that German was the reason and the Country that caused the war. Fischer believed that - '(Germany) was convinced of its own military strength and was ready to use war to achieve its aims', and, 'The primary goal was to achieve security... they would fight Britain with every means possible'. Fischer shows here that Germany was intent on a war so as to try to better their country. Berghahn believed that - 'war was a necessity for German survival', Which is like the thoughts of Fischer. The other Historians believed along the same lines as Fischer - That Germany was to Blame with the Thoughts of Weltpolitic, Militarism, The Schliffen Plan and Germany's imperial aims in creating the tension in Europe. Other Historians believe that Germany should not take the full responsibility for there were other countries that contributed. For example - 'the first World War was the third Balkan war got out of control', which tells us that Germany didn't have much to do with the start of World War One as the Balkan wars were only to do with the countries in the Balkan's.

Ok, Adolf Hitler during WWI was a mindless grunt of a corpral. Secondly The treaty of Versailles ended WWI and was more or less responsible for WWII. Thirdly WWI was not caused by one single event. Europe had been preparing for a massive military battle since the Franco-Prussian war in the 1870's. True, the murder of the archduke of austria kicked the whole thing off but if the murder hadn't of happened, the war would have started anyway in a year or two. Think of WWI not as a convential war, with a purpose like WWII which was either attempting to dominate the globe or, fighting against global domination. WWI was the leaders of europe acting like 5 year olds in a sandbox. The whole "betcha can't beat my dump truck with your bulldozer" syndrome. The practical upshot of all this is a pointless war for dominance in europe which was eventually won by a foreign power. The U.S.A. but that is another story entirely.

Ok, Hitler was 24 in the start of WWI, and DID fight "bravley" was a Corperal very quickly. He was Blinded, and worked in POW camps after. He had a tutor (can't remember his name) that taught him how to give dramatic speeches with body language and high emotion, then he kept his eye on the "underdog" Nation Socialist German Works party. He joined as a minor speaker, then quickly impressed people. He formed a small group of thugs to keep order at party's and to keep rival party's from joining. Eventually it was re-named the Nazi party, and the rest is history.

The main cause of WW1 was soooooooo the invasion of Belgium I've just written a frikkin essay about this! When Belgium was invaded Britain joined the war, thus joining together all of the smaller wars in Europe. After this the other countries, outside of Europe, joined the war, such as the U.S.A.
Regarding Hitler, that was a particularly unintelligent thing to say because Hitler affected things in the second world war, which was 20 years later. Get your facts right!

The reasons for WWI vary, but Europe was a hotbed of tensions waiting to boil over because of 4 underlying reasons: nationalism, militarism, the alliances, and imperialism. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the spark that ignited the war.

The Treaty of Versailles and Hitler came into power AFTER WWI...the Treaty was largely responsible for the rise of Hitler and WWII because it put Germany to shame: it disrespected it and blamed it for the war.

Me nether, i don't think Hitler has anything to do with WWI. It was because of what Europe was doing and situation that Europe was in. Well, in other words don't blame Hitler or a specific country. If you really want a good answer, search for it. I think all ideas have already been tyed... it wouldn't make sense to make another entry

I think you'll find that Hitler did fight in WW1. The assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was one major cause of the war. This gave the austro-hungarians the excuse to attack the Serbs. They called their ally Germany for help forming the allied entente (or something like that).then germany invaded Belgium who were allies with Great Britain and Russia so those 2 countries also joined the war. Got it now??

Firstly, Hitler was in the army in WW1! Then he was shot but survived (unfortunately)! The cause of the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the treaty that Austria sent to Serbia! Serbia only agreed to 8 out of the 10 of the points which made Austria angry and wanted to attack! Austria was Allies with Germany who helped enforce the attack on Belgium and Russia!

Just so you know we are only fifteen and seem to know more than some of you!!!

You lot are silly.
Hitler wasn't dead.
But he was alive as a solider in the German army in WW1(although he was indeed Austrian}
As smart alec "Nikki" said the treaty of Versailles was establish because of the first world war in order to establish peace.
However, it is now apparent with the outbreak of war in 1939 the treaty of Versailles was a factor in WW2 as it enabled Hitler to exploit the Weimer constitution becoming Chancellor and then Furher in 1933.
Thank you,

Hitler was no way associated in the start of The Great War, in fact he was in the army during the war and recived the Iron Cross, The Treaty of Versailles was created at the end of The Great War because the allies felt Germany was to powerful for The British Empire to survive. Americans are stupid to think the treaty was before the war

In a nutshell - WW1 was not caused primarily by reaction to the Assassination of Ferdinand- That was the catalyst which sparked a series of declarations of war with pretexts ranging from vested interests in other countries not being invaded (eg. Russia and Serbia) to Fear of consequences if no involvement (Germany fearing loss of Austria Hungary and consequence of encirclement)

Hi i will be telling you the main causes of ww1 so lets begin:

World War II, global military conflict that, in terms of lives lost and material destruction, was the most devastating war in human history. It began in 1939 as a European conflict between Germany and an Anglo-French coalition but eventually widened to include most of the nations of the world. It ended in 1945, leaving a new world order dominated by the United States and the USSR.

More than any previous war, World War II involved the commitment of nations' entire human and economic resources, the blurring of the distinction between combatant and noncombatant, and the expansion of the battlefield to include all of the enemy's territory. The most important determinants of its outcome were industrial capacity and personnel. In the last stages of the war, two radically new weapons were introduced: the long-range rocket and the atomic bomb. In the main, however, the war was fought with the same or improved weapons of the types used in World War I. The greatest advances were in aircraft and tanks.
and thats about it thank u =-)

Instead he would rise and become the leader of Germany by WWII. Please make your own research. One reference website is http://www.secondworldwar.co.uk/ahitler.html

Hitler  was born in 1889 and joined the Bavarian Army in 1914 for the duration of the war. The treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919 after the armistice and it is one  reason of the second world war because the Germans could not accept the infamy of this treaty which was actually very  harsh to them. Hitler used the clauses of the treaty to rally support to the cause of the  national socialist  party, the NSDAP. Having said that it is true that this forum is full of ignorant assh.... Have a good day and open some book of history before to post stupid questions.

The cause of world war one, if you can blame it on one person, would be the guy that assasinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand (not the scotish band. This started a small war between Austria and Serbia and then they all started to draw on their allies and got nearly all the world invoved. Hitler was about 22 when he entered world war 1 as a soldier, he recieved 2 iron crosses for his services. The Treaty of Versailles was signed after ww1 and its main focus was blaming Germany for the war. Hitler started WW2 but not WW1.

Who is Responsible for Causing World War I? In August of 1914, the war to end all wars began. The First World War saw incredible amounts of casualties because of new fighting techniques and technology, among other reasons. While it is clear who the victors of the war were after the battles had been fought and the Peace of Paris signed, what is not clear is who started this war. Historians have debated this question since the very early stages of the war and it is one that still remains without one concrete answer. A common elementary history textbook will explain the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria as the sole cause for World War one, but further research seriously brings this statement into question. I feel as though it was not one single person, or even a single country who/that caused the war, but rather a series of events and situations which include the following: the allying of countries and preparing for war which preceded the fighting itself, the actions of the Black Hand as a message of Serbian nationalists, the persuasion of Austria-Hungary by Germany for a swift retribution for this act, and Russia's swift mobilization of troops along the Central Powers' eastern border in the early stages of the war. The first and possibly most important cause of World War I may have been the allying of the countries involved in the war and the posturing for action which they participated in. Although many treaties were signed and many alliances made previously, the start of the time line of WWI may be traced to the Dual Alliance signed by Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1879, to which Italy joined in 1882 forming the Triple Alliance. It was an agreement that was one of military protection, stating that if any member of the alliance were to become involved in the war with two other powers, they would respond with military aid and intervention. This agreement was countered by the Franco-Russian Alliance signed in 1894. Its terms were similar to that of the Triple Alliance's. These two agreements directly opposed one another. Who would there be to oppose these groups but one another? These drawing of allies basically served to prepare Europe for eminent war. After their signings, it seems very plausible and likely that the many power struggles in Europe would only be solved by warfare. At this point in time, many countries started to prepare for a war that they were unsure would even occur, much less who it would be fought against. The first of these movements was the incredible investment of France's resources into Russia. The French knew that to be a valuable ally, Russia would have to be better equipped and more able to fight, if needed. Therefore, by the time Russia started to mobilize in the early stages of war, France had invested incredible amounts of money and resources to support and build up its principle ally. However, They were not the only countries preparing for possible war. Germany took this opportunity to construct a naval fleet. The chief result of this naval production was an equal production from England, which held a common interest of having a two-to-one naval advantage over all other countries. The ongoing one-upping between these two countries led to huge fleets being assembled with no other primary function, save for war. Because of this, these new navies only increased the probability of a costly war. By the beginning of war, the German to English ship ratio was in proportion of 10 - 16 which the English often regarded as unmenacing. These events were causes of the war in that they affected many other countries besides those directly involved. Neighboring countries noticing increased armament would only want to arm themselves, which is what happened in this instance. The result was the cause of a widespread nervousness in regards to a war that more and more people were not only coming to expect, but also one that many were starting to realize would be quite great in scope. The next significant event, in my opinion, was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria by the Serbian nationalist group, Black Hand. The actual assassination is not nearly as important as the message it was intended to send, as well as the far-reaching effects it had. The Archduke had been on a visit to the Serbian portion of Austria-Hungary to issue a message of diplomacy. Understanding that these Serbs would be extremely important in the looming war, the crowned prince wanted to give these people representation in the Austria-Hungary government. While opposed by the Hungarian portion of the government because of the possible weakening it offered them, this plan was favored by the most powerful members of the state, the Austrians. Knowing that Serbs constituted a significant part of their army, and understanding that these people only added to their power as a kingdom over all, they were more than willing to accept the Archduke's plans. The key group that wasn't however, were the Serbians of the neighboring Serbia. Fresh off becoming a regional superpower after the Balkan wars of 1912 and 1913, this group next wanted to annex the Serbian Portion of Austria-Hungary. They had a nationalistic feeling that led them to want to unite their people. Thus, they came to the conclusion that this would be their best route for action. However, it not only did not server their purposes, but many have actually backfired in its original intentions, certainly in its outcome in Europe, but also in regard to Serbians. This action was probably the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Austria-Hungary could not stand by and take this direct attack without being defaced in front of other powers. Their only reservation was to make certain that their principle ally, Germany, would support an outcome of retaliation. When support came in the form of the famous blank check and unconditional support from Germany, a strong urging of action also came with it. This support may have led to an irreversible action signifying the start of WWI. Germany's insistence that Austria-Hungary strike immediately may have been the key reason for Austria-Hungary's retaliation. After their initial declaration of support of their ally, the Germans increasingly pressured them to strike. When the Austro-Hungarian point of ultimatum to Serbia, which included public expression of fault, judicial measures against those who may be involved and immediate elimination of all possible anti-Austro-Hungarian propaganda, among other points was rejected, it was hardly a surprise to those involved in its construction, such as German Under-Secretary of State Zimmerman. This event signified the success of this pressure and Germans realizing their goal for Austria-Hungary if not for themselves. This ultimatum would not only give Austria-Hungary power over Serbia, but also be …Incompatible with [Serbia's] dignity as a sovereign state. When Austria-Hungary finally declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914, it was no longer the quick action that Germany wanted, rather a premeditated attack. With this declaration of war, the power balance of Europe was upset. Russia, not wanting a substantial power, in the form of Austria-Hungary, to build strength with a victory over Serbia on its doorstep, was quick to become involved. Russia immediately mobilized forces in response to the Austro-Hungarian military mobilization that had occurred so closely to their nation. It wasn't a response to impose war, they claimed, but one of protection of Russia. Thus, both major alliances were brought into the new war, which had by now become irreversible. Therefore, the Black Hand's actions eventually cause World War I, but is still may have been avoided had one last event not occurred. The last key event in the cause of World War I, in my opinion, was not in fact a precursor to the war, rather one of its major surprises. The mobilization of Russian forces after Germany declared war on France may have led the war to progress to one of world importance, instead of being a quick victory for Germany. This event was made pivotal because of the German contingency plan for the war known as the Schlieffen Plan. The problem with this was that it was Germany's one and only plan for war. In short, it had two major stipulations. First, Germany planned to march on Paris and take the city after surrounding it. They figured that this would be a swift capture and then they would swiftly mobilize back to their eastern front to engage the Russian force that they were positive would be slow in mobilizing. This plan was to take approximately three weeks, at the conclusion of which Germany would arise as the super-power of Europe. The major flaw of this plan was the incredible oversight of in regards to Russian forces. Russia was able to mobilize their troops into position within 24 hours, when the German contingency plan allotted a much longer period of time for this movement. This caused the Germans to break off their attack of Paris to defend their country, rather than to fight it offensively. This mobilization ended up causing the war that eventually occurred because of it. If the Russians hadn't surprised almost all of Europe with the quickness with which they were able to pose a threat to Germany, Germany's plan may well have succeeded. In the opinion of many historians, the taking of Paris was proceeding favorably for them. They also had more than enough power and resources to defeat an ill supplied Russian army. However, with both going on simultaneously, Germany was spread too thin. Germany mistook Russian advancement as a serious threat, when in actuality, it turned out to be poorly supplied and may have been easily defeated with a full German force that was expected to encounter it. This retreat of the Germans led to the French being able to gain a much more even battle on the western front, which was where the majority of the war was to be fought. Thus, the war that could have ended in only three weeks lasted for over four years. To say that there was on person, one event, or even one country that started a particular war is often a gross misrepresentation. In the case of World War I this statement is even more applicable. It seems as though leaving out any of the events previously mentioned may not only have led to a shorter war, but may have also caused this incredible battle for power to have never occurred.

clearly you are all retarded because, as a mere soldier in the army, Hitler most definitely did not cause WWI. Maybe you are just too stupid to realize that this is WWI you are asking about...not WWII...dumbass.

hitler was alive but didnt start ww1.  It was triggered by the assasination of the archduke and his wife but the black hand.  Also it was caused by alliances too.

Hitler was not the MAIN cause of WW1,but he was one of the problems. The fact that he wanted to take over all of Germany was obsured. If Poland didnt stand up,he probably would've gone for the rest of the world.Think back people,he was part of WW1,not the cause, duh!

cut the guy some slack,he was out of his mind, yet smart at the same time.
Okay,its hard to explain.

Hitler didn't have much to do with WW1. Every global super power (Germany Russia America Great Britain France etc.) was trying to be the best, biggest guns, biggest empire (even if it meant shooting down some little guys)biggest army and navy. So they all formed buddy systems where one nation would watch over another even if something really small and insignificant happened. The assasination of Archduke Ferdinand was only the spark that started the fire. One little country on one side felt like they had to revenge the murder  by declaring war on another country so one country asked another country for help and the other did the same. So eventually you had every country in Europe fighting because of one man. Thats WW1 in a nutshell.

the treaty of versailles was drawn up as a consequence of world war one.

hitler did not agree with the terms of the treaty, and was one of the reasons he wanted power. hitlers constitution of power was 1933, which was quite a while after ww1

Hitler had  NOT come to power in WW1. Even I, an 8th grader, know that! Obviously, you don't know much about this topic if you think Hitler was the cause of it. Maybe you're confusing it with WW2 (the Holocaust) because he was definitely a cause  of that. Whoever said that the Treaty Versailles was the cause of it- well, it wasn't! The causes of WW1 were nationalism, imperialism, alliances, and big things like that (NOT Hitler!)

WW1 was cause by the race for power in Europe.
Also Hitler was not the main cause. if you have read his journal you would know he was psycho but he wasn't the cause of the world war.

i dont believe he was the cause as he was only just born. i think the cause was...

that all countries were trying to compete with each other and finding new ways in which they could outsmart everyone else. they just felt threatend.

actually, you stupid imbeciles that obviously know nothing about history, Adolf Hitler was born long before WW1. He fought in WW1, so unless a one year old managed to enlist and get gassed during the war, i am fairly certain that he was born long beforehand.
another thing: Hitler had nothing to do with WW1, or at least the beginning of it. WW1 was started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was the nephew of the king of Austria. this led to Austria sending a message to Serbia with a list of demands that they knew Serbia would not agree to. after Serbia refused, Austria invaded Serbia. Due to a bond between the Russians and the Serb's, the Russian's mobilised to defend Serbia. The German's mobilised due to a treaty that they had with Austria, and sent out a declaration of war on France, then two days later on Russia. this led to the implementation of the Schlieffen Plan, which everyone should know led to the downfall of the German's, despite it being a really good plan to begin with, before the bastards changed it.
finally, the Versailles Treaty was the treaty between the Big Three and Germany...after the war. there was no use of it before WW1. it was a major factor to the beginning of WW1 and it can be said that this was why Hitler gained control of Germany and was why the German's ignored all the bad things he did, as he had done so much for their country already.
