I don't believe long-hairs rank any differently than short-hairs.  Overall, I would think they should be near the top of the list.  I believe the poodle is considered the most intelligent, but I would put chihuahuas above them.  For one thing, they refuse to allow their hair to be cut into such a wimpy style, and for another the chihuahua is the best at training their owners.

Chihuahuas and Huskies are the smartest definitely. They are both good at training their owners, though can be trained well with the proper education, and seem to know how to get out of every situation they don't agree with. I was surprised to hear that some people view poodles as intelligent. Everyone I've met thinks of them as pretty dumb dogs. I actually thought they were.

In intelligence tests, poodles ranked the highest.  Tests were finding a hidden goodie, responding to commands and removing a towel thrown over the head, among others.

Well, we all know that a chihuahua can find a tasty morsel from a mile away, and will obey commands, as long as you take the time to explain to them what's in it for them if they do what you asked.  As for taking off a towel, any intelligent chi knows that the correct response to having a towel thrown over their heads is to get the rest of their body under it, curl up and snuggle in.

That's it, the test is unfair, it's rigged so that chi's don't rank as highly as they should.  Standardized testing is a joke!!!*

*the above is satire, and is strictly the opinion of this very biased human.

I did read somewhere that poodles are the smartest of dog breeds. My brother has a pug and I think my little chihuahua is smarter as far as house breaking is concerned.

I can say straight off the back, Poodles are much smarter, and the smartest breed period. My family had a mini poodle, he lived to be 17 y/o. Well behaved, and enjoyed everyone. There was not one time where he even accidentally pottied in our home. He would always sit by the door, letting us know he wants to go out. So we would open the door, while we go do other things.(meaning we don't have to watch him) And when he's done, he sits outside the door and we would let him in. Poodles are so darn smart!

Yeah, i agree. I've read lots of different sources that confirm that Border Collie's are first, poodles second and  retrievers/shepards are third.

I don't want to rain on everyone's parade,,,,But only Bill is correct and rainthedivadog is close. Husky'sat best are middle of the road, to lower half of the dog world intelligence. Husky'sactually have been notorious for not listening. Chi's are about #65 out of 79, even worse. Though the top five or ten breeds may switch spots from time to time, they have always been: The Border Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Poodle, Doberman, Shetland Sheepdog, Schnauzer's and so on,,,,

Chihuahuas are the smartest dogs.  I have two of them.  They're smart, independent and loyal.  They do what they want to do when they want to do it.  They have a huge vocabulary and don't love to do tricks.  Dumb dogs love to do simple, degrading tricks to please their owners, and I'm glad my dogs don't do that.

Hi. I have owned both chihuahuas and poodles. I loved my little chi so much but he would not housebreak. I did everything but he was smart in other areas. I would have to say that my poodle is the smartest. So smart you have to spell the words walk and bye bye so that she won't run and pull down her leash. She knows so many words AND she was housebroken in a week using the crate method. My vote goes to the poodles

Studies have shown that Border Collies and Poodles are by FAR the smartest dog breeds.
Yes, we may think our friendly little Chihuahas are the smartest dogs to us, but almost EVERY dog owner thinks that about their little pooch. I myself have had a Chihuaha, and boy was she smart. But, think of it this way. Chihuahas are more of the playful/friendly pal types, not exactly built to be the "smartest". As you may know  Border Collies herd, participate in K9 sports (such as Agility, Flyball, etc.), and so on and so forth. Chihuahas are more of the cuddly types of dogs that snuggle in your lap when you get home from work/school.
Sorry if my answer didn't get quite clear to you...if it didn't, my answer of course is 1st Border Collies, then Poodles.

Well first of I would like to say I just love this website! It's great. I mean we are all just chatting about dogs. WOW!I love dogs. Well second I would pick for the smartest dog would be a Papillon Pomapoo.
Silly name, isn't it now? I am laughing out loud, or as the kids say it, "lol" that is also silly that kids these days are abreviating stuff that they should spell out Well I'm sorry I'm getting of foucus.
I think the dumbest dog would have to be Chupumpa, that is also a silly name.
