As soon as I start my 1999 VW Beetle the light comes on saying that the vehicle is overheating. I was wondering if it could be something small and easily fixed without having to go pay a fortune for someone to tell me it needs a 2.00 part.

It does not mean it is overheating the light indicates the engine has not warmed up and will go off after warm up

The red overheating light indicates the coolant level is low.  There is a sensor in the top of the round plastic coolant tank that needs to be in the coolant.  When it is not in the coolant, it turns the red thermometer on.  The Blue thermometer just indicates the engine hasn't warmed up yet.  Be sure to add the correct type of coolant.

the blue light means the engine is cold.  once the engine starts to warm up it will go off.  if this light is red,  this is when you have a problem

If the light appears red you are going to have to pay allot of money. This car is planned obesclance I have a 2000 with only 30,000 miles. Too many problems to mention.

Go get it checked out and sell it , even if you don't think you can afford it get rid of it any day now you will have another problem. Trust me. I hate Volkswagen and they manipulated people into buying a novelty looking car that is a inferior product.

My wife's '99 Beetle overheated with only 34k miles on it. They replaced the water pump (destroyed by overheating) the thermostat & housing (housing cracked due to overheating) flushed the system and added new coolant.

After all these repairs, the car overheated again (8 miles down the road).

The cooling fans were not coming on at the correct temperature, so next, they're going to replace the temperature sensor(s) ... and if this doesn't correct the problem, the sensor computer module ...

After diagnosing everything, apparently, the  'root cause' was that the cooling fans weren't working properly.

We'll be getting rid of this car when we get it back ... it's just not reliable anymore. We've had other issues with this car, like excessive oil consumption and way too many other plastic parts breaking, like a plastic bell-crank in the shifting rod assembly (@ 30k miles), which left my wife with only 3rd & 4th gears!  REAL SAFE CAR ... NOT.
