I have a 7 year old chocolate lab, and adopted him when he was already 3. He was full grown, and had a lot of bad habits. I found that giving him lots of positive attention when he was being good really helped. I also rewarded him with treats for the first few months when I'd give commands and he followed them.

i am a dog trainer and i also show dogs.i have 2 choc.labs and one springer spainel.the earlier that you start giving your dog small comands like sit and stay will definately help out in the long run. never get fustratd with your dog. as soon as you feel your self getting fustraed with your dog stop the lesson and come back when you have you feel better.NEVER hit your dog to punish him.that will make him fear you and he will become skidish.try to use a chocker colar (only when doing a excirse) and give him gental tugs when he dosent obey your comands.
