I just got a male chocolate chihuahua and terrier mix and he eats grass everyday even though there is fresh  bowl of lamb and rice puppy food(wet) and a bowl of dry ames puppy food daily. Someone told me his digestive system is still developing. Does anyone have any input on this?

I have two chihuahuas, with mixed results.  My larger one is 8 months and occasionally will nibble.  My little one just loves her 'salad'.  She's 1 1/2 years old, eats her kibbles and gets veggies for treats.  Doesn't make any difference, let her out in the yard and she starts grazing like a goat.  Must be a chihuahua trait, someone else I know has two and they both do it.  As long as he isn't yacking it back up, consider it normal for him.  Ask your vet the next time you see her/him, they should be able to reassure you or provide advice as to how to get him to stop.  Thanks for showing concern for your pet.

I have an 8 month old chi and she loves her grass too.  I haven't ever seen her yack anything up at all, so I don't think of it as a bad thing.  As long as she is healthy and doesn't expect table food I let her do what she wants!

My dog has been throwing up.....I think it is when I change her food so I have put her on her regular diet again......(mighty dog -beef-) I'm not sure if this is normal or if she is sick......She recently just got her first shots....

Puppies often throw up as a reaction to shots, especially rabies.  Since chihuahuas are so small, this is more frequent with them.  I wouldn't expect it to last more than a day though.  The vet can give them something to help settle their tummies.

Changing food may often cause this, although my two eat whatever I put in their bowls.  I feed only dry kibbles, as moist food gives them the runs.  When in doubt, to the vet you go.  Chihuahuas are so tiny, a missed meal is much more of an issue than it is for a larger dog.

I have a chihuahua named Lucky, and he has never eaten grass. I always feed him dry puppy food and only snacks for puppies. I have never fed him anything else. He does not eat any kind of people food either. I have never heard any of my friends say anything about their dogs eating grass either..........

Are you certain she isn't eating at all?  If she has energy, she's eating enough.  A chi has a tiny tummy, it doesn't take much to fill it up.  Because of that, chi puppies especially need to eat many times a day.  I feed Science Diet small bites puppy food, Royal Canin, etc.  It's dry, I leave some in the bowl all the time so puppy can eat whenever she wants.  Now that both my girls are grown, they seem to eat twice a day.

I encourage you NOT to give people food or the semi-moist pouches.  People food isn't formulated for dogs, and a chihuahua needs to get maximum nutrition from everything it eats.  Semi-moist stays that way because there's a lot of sugar in it, so it attracts and retains water.  Sugar is the last thing a chihuahua needs.  Wet food can often give them diarrhea.

Your vet can reassure you that she is doing OK, I also recommend getting the book chihuahuas for dummies, which is the best book I have on the care and maintenance of these adorable creatures.

Again, are you sure she isn't eating anything?  Do not put peanut butter or any other human food in her bowl, that will only teach her that if she doesn't eat her kibbles, she'll get something better.  They have such tiny tummies that chihuahuas have to get maximum nutrition from every bite.  Your vet can help you find something, read up this thread if you haven't already for other ideas.  And just because she won't eat a certain food doesn't mean you have to throw it out, many shelters will take donations of unused food.

i have a 6 week old puppy. i'm not sure what kind she but looks like a terrier mix. she will sometimes throw her food up even before she got her first shots for rabies, etc. the back end like near her tail and hips/legs (hard to tell you what i mean) it will throb and she'll make this gagging noises or something and then she'll throw up her food which is sometimes a liquid or partially digested. she was taken to the vet yesterday to get her shots and i asked the vets about her throwing up and they said something about eating her food too quick or i sometimes put a little water on her food (dry food) to moisten it up. i'm not too sure if the vets were right about that though. should I keep doing that? and yes she does eat grass sometimes. if you have any ideas whats wrong, please help! :)

I have had dogs/puppies all my life, all different breeds and mixes....some eat grass, some don't.  I would never worry about it - unless of course their are poisonous plants, but I have never had a dog nibble on a poisonous plant either.  Just grass.

I have a little chihuahua terrier mix named Duke.  He is such a little terd.  No matter how much I try to make his diet healthy, he is either eating things like grass or the cotton out of his stuffed animals.  He never throws up, and my vet said he is super healthy. Aside from pulling out small fiber and plastic pieces out of his fecal samples when checking his health, my vet says he is the happiest, healthiest, and most energetic dog she has seen.  All in all, if your vet claims your dog healthy and happy... no worries!

I am concerned that anyone would let a puppy go at 6 weeks, expecially a small breed!

She is so young her tummy is not ready for much more then Moms milk, so feed her with extream caustion. I would use Eukanuba for small breed puppies and moisten it and let her try that. It is gentle on the baby tummy and packed full of what they need. 6 weeks is just too darn young to be taken from Mom, period!

I have a male chihuahua/terrier mix and he eats dry dog food mixed with can food and he has no problems unless I only give him one or the other by itself or if you are too close to where he is eating which makes him eat faster do to thinking you are competing for his food and in turn he will throw up because his little tummy cant hold it all. My dog also eats grass and will sometimes throw up.

My new Chi puppy isn't eating well either...heh, at least she won't eat dry kibbles. As a result my parents are hand feeding her whatever they're eating, which is giving her the runs. I've tried feeding her on Iams puppy food but she wouldn't touch it and went all wobbly and lethargic when I wouldn't give her people food.

I'd ideally like to know how to get her to eat dry kibbles and how to get her out of the hand feeding thing without killing her...

I have two Chihuahuas; Mango and Phoebe, and they both eat grass because my other dog Bo does (He's a Pit Bull-Lab). I heard that grass help them to digest their food better, but eating too mush grass can make them vomit. I just did a science project that I had to find what kind of food dogs like most and I found out that some human foods are better than the dog food you buy for them and the treats too. Grass is good for them, but try to make them stop eating it for a while and see what happens, they should be off the habbit.
Ja ne!

you should test her for a provo disease.  i had a young puppy like yours that kept throwing up his food.  the first day i got him, i got a call from the humane society saying that his brothers and sisters and him got the disease and thats why he was throwing up.  i sugest you act now because she could die.  the only way you could save her is by going to her vet.  it will cost a lot of money.  if you get her the treatment, there's a 50/50 chance she still might die.  the provo disease is only caught by younger puppies. So that's the only reason I'm sugesting this. to bad for me i had to give him back. cause we didn't have the money to save him. so he ended up dying. but dont give up hope!!!

I have a 3 1/2 month old Boston Terrier... she has been throwing up a lot lately. Some days she won't do it at all and some days, like today, she will throw up at least 3 times. It is brown with partially digested food in it. Gross, I know! But then she eats it after it's come up. Is this normal? I feed her Purina Puppy chow and she eats well. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have a chi/terrier mix that my husband I rescued going on two weeks ago.  She is now the love of my life, but I do get frusturated with her, especially when I take her out to pee and not two seconds later she is peeing inside or something.  I also noticed yesterday she started the digging outside.  She loves to eat other dogs poop and now mud/grass.  How do I get her to stop the digging?

I have been told by my vet that a food like purina one lamb and rice or chicken and rice is the best, number one, the food colorings in other dog foods are harmful to ALL dogs, and there is a lot of icky things in other foods that will make them sick or ruin their skin. I fed him boiled chicken and rice for a few days and then mixed in some purina one (any brand is fine as long as it is food coloring free)a little at a time until that is all he eats now. Also canned food is not good for dogs because it has only about a third of the protein of the dry. My vet said its like feeding him candy and expecting it to fully nourish him.

Don't let it eat grass, people will tell you its good for them and not to worry. There are parasites and fleas in the grass, you think that will sit well once they digest some of that stuff? Not good at all as far as I'm concerned. I don't see why anyone would want a chihuahua in the first place, unless you enjoy cuddling with a bony little rat that barks all the time and is stubborn as a mule. My gf has one and I'm constantly terrorizing the damn thing, it marks its territory all over her house. Just a plain nuisance, why people like them I will never understand. Do yourself a favor and get a real dog, a border collie maybe? Ive got a 7 week old and she rocks, I've already got her potty trained, sitting, fetching at 7 weeks. A real companion that you can enjoy with a brain and is beautiful!

I am in school for veterinary medicine and just a little advise. One of the best things to feed your puppy, no matter what breed, is cooked chicken, turkey or lamb. Yes the same food we eat. Who says a dog has to eat bagged food that they add preservatives to or "wet" food that contains so much fat and bi-products?(that's just like feeding your kid McDonald's everyday) Who says they should not enjoy the same nutritious food as we do including veggies. I feed my chi (8weeks) fresh turkey, lamb, broccoli and green beans. She is doing great and I have raised my 2 Am. Bulls on this too. Anyone who does not have the time or money to feed fresh food can feed a good quality dog food which is fine too. And to the people who think a dog should never have "people" food...Think about what a dog would eat in the wild and you will realize that what we call "people" food is DOG FOOD TOO!!!

I have a male chi/terrier and he eats grass occasionally. I don't let him eat much, but every now and then he likes it. He's 6 years old and has never suffered a health problem from it. Someone once told me that dogs actually need chlorophyl, and that's why they eat grass.

I just got a 3 year old Yorkie and he eats grass all the time. When I let him out in the yard, he starts grazing like a cow. It's OK for dogs to eat grass. I've heard that it doesn't do anything, and I've heard that it is actually helpful to a dog's digestive system. I don't suggest you let your dog eat too much, or they may not be hungry for their regular food (this happened to a friend of mine'sdog)
