My clown fish that I have had less than 5 hours has developed a white cotton-like substance between the last white strip and the last top fin.  Is this Lymphocystis or is it finrot?  If it is one of these things, how to I treat it and is it contagious to my other fish?

I had the same thing happen with my clown fish within couple hours of introducing it to my tank. It dessapeared few days later.  Maybe the changes in environment cause it?  Make sure your water is in good condition.

You can treat this by putting your into some fresh water, same temperature as your tank for several minutes, the diferent osmosic pressure will relieve your fish of the fungus, think about getting a sea anemone to keep its skin in good condition

NO! Don't get a sea anenome! Clown fish need anenomes only in the wild, and It will not help the fungus. Anenomes are not good in captivity. They are hard to care for and will most likely die. "nick's" solution might work, but...Don't buy an anenome!

Don't buy an Anenomes. Clown fish do not need Anenomes to live, they only use Anenomas in the wild to protect themselves from predators. If you buy Anenomes many of clown fish in the sea will die. Clown fish are becoming extinct because of people buying Anenomes. This is not causing the problem your having.

I would say about the clown fish, that they have a mucous substance that they excrete which protects them from the tenacles of the sea anemones.  This may be what this is, but I would check with the place you purchase the fish to see if this is what it is.  OK

I am disgusted with all of you! Did you know that the clown fish are almost becoming as extinct as the Panda? and why you ask? because all of you decided you need one as a pet. i was doing a research project on how endangered they are and came across this page. i am completely disgusted. the reason your fish is like that is because it need to be back in its natural habitat. and NO getting an anemone will not help, they too are now becoming endangered. you say anemones are not good in captivity well either are clown fish.

you should first check all your water parimaters and adjust them if needed as for the anemone it is a good ideia to have one if you think you can look after it otherwise you could dig a deeper hole for your self if it dies in the tank red bubble are quite good, apparently  the anemone coats the fish with a protective film which helps the fish fend of things like this one thing you could try if you dont have any SPS coral is to lower the specific gravity to about 1.018-1.019 lower it slowly over a few days and keep it at this till it starts to clear            .you should also keep them feeding through the day at regular intervals but only small
portions of food at a time maybe with some
garlic extract soaked in the food (from fish shop not food) see what happens

To Rachelle, you may want to look into a disease called clownfish disease and see if it is that. If it is there are medications you can treat it with, like any containing formalin or malachite green.

To csteffen, I had a false percula clown who did the same thing and sadly died but I never figured out what had happened. Hopefully you will have better luck then me.

dont put your fish in fresh water, if it is a fungus the difference in the electrolites from salt to fresh can be stressful on the fishes osmotic regulation which could kill the already weakened fish in just minuets time, I have had great success with my anenomes but would not recomend them for "skin care" usually clowns will not use them right off anyway, I suggest you look at the fishes diet, and if it is eating well and the water quality is good, just  observe.   And   please do not leave such childesh comments goody gills... ACs

This is a good sign it shows that the clown fish is marking its territory. Wich means it is loving the marine enviroment.

whatever you do.. do not put an anemone in your aquarium.. they cannot survive in a captive environment, and when they die they release toxins into your tank that will kill everything else in the tank. the only reason clown fish need anemone in the wild is to protect them from predators. the solution to your problem is not an anemone

I disagree I have 4 clowns and 5 anenome they all live very will in captivity.  (Granted they are a little hard to care for)  but I find the clowns do seem to be better cared for with an anenome.  I would give your clown a fresh water bath.  30 seconds max.  if this doesn't work and you have no corals you might want to add a bit of iodine

Does any know how long it takes for a clown to start its relationship with a newly added anemone? I had two clowns prior to adding an anemone and two days have gone by without them getting into it. I made sure my anemone was the right match for my clowns too.

I've had my "nemo" :D for a few months and I have never had any issues with him (knocks on wood) But I am always checking the salt level and all that fun stuff!

I was wondering if anyone knows about the puffer fish... I've been wanting to add one to my tank but I am not sure how my clown fish will react or how the puffer fish will react.

Any advice would be cool -

Thanks
