Installing a new roof fan. Wiring from house has 3 wires-black,red,white. One I'm sure goes to an on-off switch. The thermostat/humidistat has only one white and a black wire. What do I hook up to what? I assume the white house wire is a ground. Which do the others connect to? Thanks!

t-stat requires hot (usually black) and neutral (usually white). find out which wire black or red is still "live" when the switch is off and connect black from t-stat to this and white to white.(to check white is neutral test continuity

4 possibilities:

1) lazy electrician used 3wire+ground instead of walking to truck to get correct 2wire+ground

2) system originally used a 2-speed fan and a center-off switch (up=high, middle=off, down=low)

3) system originally used two switches (google for "3-way switch wiring") but one has been replaced by thermostat

  3) thermostat is very sophisticated and acts as a three way switch - very unlikely
