4K does seem a little high for 3rd but I'm a little suspect of 4200# true weight. By the time my co-pilot finished loading we had added at least half a ton of water, pots &pans, groceries, propane, etc. I pulled similar weight with 429 ford ltd and it lost speed on slight grade because rear end ratio was "weak" in the 2.? range. If you are in 4K range you should go ahead and manually down shift to 2nd.  I solved my problem by getting vehicle with 3.73 rear end.
