Convertible Top Issue with 94 Lebaron Convertible LX.  Over a long period of time, the convertible top in my car became increasingly slow going up and coming down and has now stopped functioning. (top does not move when button is pushed and motor does not sound)  I've already filled the hydraulic cylinder w/ the right fluid and I am afraid this could be a motor issue.  I prefer to find a motor in a junkyard and put it in myself (broke college student)...any suggestions?  Is this easy?  How do I begin to troubleshoot and how do I locate the motor?

hotrod: I have recently ran into the same problem with my 1995 lebaron. The click comes from the relay (you can find it in back of the trunk. It's the brown rectangular object attached to the motor mounting bracket). Since the relay works you need to check the secondary, higher amp circuit. First check the fuse in the dash panel to see if it needs replacement. On my car the fuse was fine, so I created a jumper wire directly from the battery, disconnected the larger yellow wire (see wiring diagram in hayne's service manual) from the relay and directly connected it. Result: Top doesn't go down. Diagnosis: Faulty motor. If the top works, then you know the problem is within the secondary circuit.

Now my problem is finding a replacement motor.

Usually all that is wrong when the motor doesn't turn with power applied is that the contacts are too dirty. There are two bolts that hold the motor to the pump. Remove the bolts, carefully remove the motor end. You will see some contacts that look very worn. You just need to use some 600 grit sandpaper to clean it up, carefully blowing any dust from between the contacts. Reassemble the two pieces and it should work fine. If you don't understand this description then find somebody who does or investigate DC motors on the web. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED. You can make it very difficult for the person who ends up doing it. Try it first on a small DC motor from Radio Shack or wherever else you find something with a small DC motor you don't care about. It really isn't too difficult to do, my twelve year old son has done this (with me watching him) and has no problem now.

Good luck

Same problem here. Took out the motor and found one of the brushes worn down to the pigtail. The brushes are metalic and have no measurable resistance. I replaced mine with carbon brushes. This did not fix the problem as the resistance across carbon brushes is too high. We need to find a source for these metalic brushes.

Part II
www.repcoinc.com has some information on metallic brushes. They are a graphite and copper mix. The closest match I could find that they sell for our motors is REP3439.

I have a 1991 Chevy Cavalier Convertible and my top was working, then after awhile it clicked and didn't move, and now it doesn't do anything. I was wondering if maybe I need to rewire it.

I know this sounds a tad crude, but sometimes in the northern states the contacts get a bunch of deposits on them.  I usually just bang on mine lightly with a socket and it knocks the goo off.
