My chihuahua seems to be having problems with his legs.  When he gets up from laying down, it seems to hurt his hind legs.  He is also overweight, so maybe that has a bit to  do with it.  Should I go see a vet?  Or do you have any idea what is going on with him?

Take him to the vet ASAP.  Chihuahuas are prone to a condition called slipped kneecaps or Luxating Patellas which means that their knee joint is not stable.  One of mine has a very mild case and shouldn't really need anything unless she develops arthritis in the joint as she gets older.

Your dog could be having arthritis or the joint could be deteriorating.  Overweight is definitely not a help, he needs to lose weight anyway but especially if he is having knee problems, your vet can help you do that.  The vet can also if necessary prescribe a pain-reliever as well as a plan for your dog to get down to a healthy weight.

Definitely take him to the vet.  In severe cases, surgery to correct the condition can be done, but the sooner the better.  Good Luck.

I am glad to see this question and the response as I just took my 5 lb. chi, Mikey, to the vet yesterday because one of his back legs seemed to be bothering him.  The vet said we will watch him and make a decision if he needs surgery over the next months.  He seems just fine today.

Thanks!

My Chihuahua is 8yrs old and does have arthritis per the vet and gave her Deramaxx only 1/4 tabs a day, but it doesn't seem to work for her and since we have moved to a new city I haven't taken her to the vet and was wondering if there were shots that can be given for it or anything else? I know she's hurting and I don't want to see her go through it anymore any suggestions? Thanks for your help...

My chihuahua has knee problems. She had knee surgery 8 months ago on her left knee and she now needs surgery on her right knee.  When the doctor opened her leg up she was lacking the grooves that hold her knee cap in place.
