between the bottom of the armature bar and the top of the front coil is your point gap. for lining adjust your contact screw until that gap is the width of a dime....nickle for shading. tune your machine higher for lining to get smooth gradual lines.

ok i have a basic guide learning myself.
for lining you lower you contact screw to 1/16 of an inch above the coil or the width of a nickel. you then turn the pin so it points at a slant to right before the needle holder on the armature bar (side note) most times i find with wattage that you tune the wattage to a speed where the when you look down the machine the up and down looks like a figure eight.
same for shades but only a more well defined 8 fashion, tuning is the width of a dime and the contact screw should point to the very tip of the armature bar at a more flat angle.
this is just what i been told and i tested it to work well.
