It depends on what you mean by "hurt".
Protection does 4 things..
A card say "Protection from <Quality X>"

1) Spells or Abilities of <Quality X> cant target a permanents that has Protection from X
         (eg. Terror vs White Knight)
(eg. Spirit Link vs Black Knight)

2) Damage of <Quality X> that is dealt to a creature with Protection from X is reduced to 0.
         (eg. Earthquake vs Silver Knight)

3) Creatures of <Quality X> can not be declared as a blocker of a creature with Protection X.
(eg. Tundra Wolves vs Black Knight)

4) Enchantments or Equipment with <Quality X> enchanting (or equipping) a creature with Protection from X are put into their owners graveyard.
         (eg. giving a creature
          protection from artifacts after
          equipment has been placed on
          it)
(eg. Animate Dead on a White
              Knight)

Note: What protection WONT do, is protect a creature with protection X, from spells that do something to that creature other than deal it damage will not be stooped by protection. Black Knight still dies to wrath of god, Oblivion stone kills an untapped Pristine Angel.
