Should "so" be used as a conjunction joining two independent clauses?

Would a subordinate construction, using "since" or "because" be a better choice?

"So" has a history as a coordinating conjunction, but it is frowned upon in this capacity in formal writing.  "Since" sounds almost familiar, but it is still better than the "so" construction.  "Because" is the safest bet.

In 2005 is "so" still considered a conjunction.  My understanding is that it was considered a conjunction in the past but that this has changed.
