What makes a cat paw (or kneed)a pillow or blanket?  Every time we pet her she starts purring & pawing.  This will last for minutes.

Thanks
Mary

IT a sign of comfort, and scent as well. They do it before they lay down, and is often called "fluffing"

Before cats were domesticated they had to mash down grasses and weeds to make a bed.

I've heard that it means the cat was taken away from its mother too early. I don't know how true it is though

when your cat was a baby and would drink from her mom she would kneed her mom's tummy to get the milk going, it was a relaxing time for her and her mom, now as a grown cat she sees you as her mom and when you are petting her it reminds her of her mom licking her and how safe and relaxed she felt so she starts doing the kneeding thing

While kneeding does allow a cat to lay down scent marking that is not the primary reason they do it.  It relates back to their nursing behavior as kittens.  Kittens kneed the mother while nursing, this helps to stimulate milk flow.  Cats continue this behavior as it is comforting to them.  It also indicates that the cat is supremly content.  Have you ever known an angry cat to kneed?
