what are the basic rules of magic the gathering

The basic rulebook is fairly long, and it helps to actually have cards in front of you while you learn...

But if you want the basics here you go:

2 players try to kill each other using their 60 card deck of magic cards.... lol

you need 60 card for a proper deck

magic is about mythical creature beating the crap out of each other

Basics of Magic The Gathering:

Two players have a deck of 60 cards each

Each player has 20 hp points

Each player starts off with 7 cards

There are two types of cards: permanents and non permanents

there are 6 categories of cards

instants
creature
sorcery
enchantment
Artifacts
Lands

Inorder to perform a move, you must use mana
which is recieved from land cards.
