Wasn't the name of the plane that Buddy Holly on when it went down was American Pie?

No. The plane was only known by the identification number painted on it's tail N3794N.

No.  It actually didn't have a name.  Its only designation were the numbers on the wing - N3794N.

Don McLean coined the term 'American Pie' for his song and, like all other details of the song, does not specify what it means to this day.

it did not have a name. it's serial number was N3794N (source: http://www.fiftiesweb.com/crash.htm)

The plane had no name, it's only designation was its wing registration number, N3794N. It's a common urban myth that it was called 'American Pie'. In 1999, Don McLean said "The growing urban legend that 'American Pie' was the name of Buddy Holly’s plane the night it crashed, killing him, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, is equally untrue. I created the term".
