Wait until the female is at least 2 years old. They usually go into heat before a year old so you may need to wait about three heats. Both the parents need to be up to date on shots and checked for all the diseases popular in this breed. Both should be registered and you should know all you can about heat, breeding, pregnancy, and whelping before taking on this great task! I will be happy to help you with any other questions you have. Email: stanishas@aol.com
Good luck and bye! Tanisha

No, it's best to breed them in their second heat cycle.

shih-tzus are bred very young and only need to be 3 months old!  JUST KIDDING...my vet told me to wait until at least 1 1/2 years old or 3 heats had passed!

I always suggest 1 1/2 years old or after having been in heat at least twice (which usually takes as long).

My Shih Tzu came with papers from a shelter (not breeding papers) putting her at just under a year.  The information said she was spayed, so I just took it for granted.  Had her vet checked out for health, but he didn't really go looking to see if she were spayed or not.  According to the papers, she should be about 16 months old and appears to be in heat.  Could this be a bad bladder infection?  She is bleeding when she urinates, but can't really tell if it is in her urine, or just noticable in her urine.  It is quite a lot to be blood in urine and is bright red.  Her vulva seems swollen.  I cannot see a scar from a spaying, wouldn't I be able to see a scar?  Is this a normal time for a female to be in heat?  She could be younger if the person that took her to a shelter lied.  This is the first experience with a female dog that has this.  Help from anyone, who is serious and not just on this site to be a jerk, would be appreciated.  Jerks need not reply.
