"Diamond in the back"

A characteristic of early model cadillacs used primarily by the urban community that was popularized in a classic song, "Be Thankful for What You Got" by one-hit wonder William Devaughn and has been covered and sampled many times over, most notably in rap songs beginning in the early 90s.

A diamond in the back refers to a diamond shape in the "Landau" custom top in the back of the Caddilac. This was widely popular.

The song was by William Devaughn, Curtis Mayfield would have never done a song like this. No remix exists.

I was a kid when that song was released and it was by william devaughn and they didn't have remixes back in the day or samples. The Diamond in the back was the rear window coverd by vinal forming a diamond. The TV antena's were antena's sticking from the rear side window and the car, Caddy's Lincolns etc. usually had curb feelers. Oh and a sunroof top was something very new, one last thing these cars belonged to players not just pimps, I hope that helps.

The Caddie's Landau top extended down across the back window and a diamond shape was cut in the covering to facilitate a rear window. May also have had small coach lanterns on the side windows. (mostly Lincolns seem to have these though).

"Diamond in the back," refer'sto the diamond tuck upholstery common in the land yacht's that the pimping industry loved so much back in the 70's.

This I know as a fact, because I actually knew a world class pimp back in the day, and he drove a maroon 1971 Lincoln Continental, with black crushed velvet diamond tuck car seats. He also had the boomerang antenea on the trunk.

The song "diamond in the back" refers to being thankful for what you have, like the original song by Curtis Mayfield. It's about not having what this material world asks for,(diamonds), but about feeling great about yourself no matter what you have. The reference to diamonds is about wealth or something great that we as a culture express a lot to have if you are important. The audience of the song was aimed toward the children in the ghetto, who don't have much but need to know why they are important. The message of the song is that we are all worth the world because of our individuality and we should express our great selves for who we really are not for what we have or the lack there of (material possessions).
