Any dog can be left alone during the day though it is hard on them and isn't a good thing. If you have to leave then get a neighbor to come over for a little while you are gone. Leaving the dog inside or outside will have its ups and downs. Inside he will have the opportunity to pee/poo all over, chew things, dig the carpet up, and be destructive. However leaving him outside will give him more chance of escaping and then he will learn to leave when he gets bored. He can also dig up the yard and disturb neighbors with his racket of loneliness.
The best thing to do might be to get two dogs. Don't get two pups at the same time because (from experience) that is a hassle! They can keep each other company but they can also team up to be naughty!
If you haven'talready gotten a pup you may want to consider whether it is a good thing to do. If you already have one then train it to do really well in the house/yard until you can trust him to be good while you are gone then get a pup for company and it can learn from example.
Good luck to you in whatever you do! Dogs are such a joy that it would be a shame you would be deprived of one! (or two!) Tanisha
