Check out the Whole Dog Journal's Top 10 dog food list, then look at Earl Wolfe's dog food comparison site (do a search for "Earl Wolfe dog food comparison). He lists dog foods by type (pet store/feed store, grocery store, independent/special order, etc) and lists their ingredients.

I've been doing an extensive search for better food for my Australian Shepherds when their coats lost quality on ProPlan, and they began eating their feces. Right now, I have them on Canidae.

According to what I've read, a good dog food should list a specifically named meat or meat meal as one of the first two ingredients and carbohydrate sources (corn, rice, wheat, etc) should be whole grains that have been ground. The fat should be specifically named- chicken fat or beef fat instead of poultry fat or animal fat.  BHA/BHT should be avoided as a preservative in favor of the the mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E and C. There should be a good level of multi vitamins and minerals and stool hardeners like beet pulp and bentonite should be at a minimum or absent in the ingredients.

Of course, there is quite a bit of talk about specific foods for specific breeds according to their country/locale of origin. So, for example, your shiba probably should be on a fish and rice diet since it is a Japanese breed. My Aussies as a European breed should probably not have corn or rice, and in fact they don't tolerate corn all that well, though rice is okay.

One of the more gruesome things that pops up with regularity from many sources on the 'net is the fact that some pet food companies are using the rendered (cooked) remains of dogs and cats that have been killed at animal shelters.

I hope this gives you some :-) food for thought.

If you buy food make sure it is made by the people that are selling it.  Make sure it is made in California, the only state that will not allow a dog food company use any 4 d meat.  No dead, deceased, dying or diseased meat.  No rendered meat.  No meat with hormones or steriods.  No other states have this law.  Look to Breeders Choice Pet Foods.  These are made in Irwindale California.

The FDA produced a report on dog foods that were not meeting the standards that are set by them, and over the last little while there has been many reports and letters written in regards to the Mad Cow meet and other horrible by-products that are in dog food I would suggest you jump onto the FDA website as well to check this information out.

The best food to feed a dog is actual food itself. Fresh fruit, veggies and chicken and beef. Dog food is usually made of the worst of the worst foods,..that did not pass USDA inspection. Such as the 4D's that auwinger mentioned above.(dead, deceased, dying or diseased) In fact,.dog food did not exist until 1930 when our country started regulating our food consumption by inspection. Meat and cereal companies had to find something to do with the food that did not pass USDA inspection so they used it for dog food. Rice,Beef,Chicken, and fruits and veggies such as beans, yogurt and cottage cheese are the best things you can feed a dog. However there are certain things you do NOT want to give a dog,.such as raisins and grapes,.which are like a poison to dogs,..and garlic. if you do not let your dog see you preparing thier food with your food they should not recognize the two as being the same and you should have no problem teaching your dog not to beg while you are eating.
