The dog could be either however you train the dog will show which one would be better at guarding...  But the Bull Mastiff has a look that would scare off intruders anyway

I believe both dogs could be good guard dogs. It just depends on the trainer. If a Golden Retriever was growling at you with its teeth showing you would be scared. Just train the dog to guard and if it is a good guard dog, then people will be scared. Pitbulls just have a bad rep. then can be amazing dogs and people need to understand that.

I have a pit-bull and she's only 9 months old....She's VERY protective and if she hears something at night shes by my door growling and barking. She's excellent! I love Pit bull's and highly recommend them. You just have to train them and be patient...... mine could just be a little slow but hey!

The Bullmastiff was bred to take down poachers, full grown men, tactically sneak up behind them and have them pinned to the ground before they could draw their gun. I myself own a Doberman pinscher I've grew up with all sorts of guard dogs and can honestly say none come finer than the dobe the only dog ever bred to be a man stoping guard dog feircely protective of its owner. Used as a War dog along side the german shepherd as attack dogs on the Germans these dogs have proved themselves feirce fighters times over The germans called them devil dogs. But their not thugish dogs these dogs have alot of style and class and if you have any taste you will see that. Handsome looks combined with brute force, fearlessness, alertness, rough and tumble ready for anything attitude. The dobe really is the worlds finest guard dog - FACT

Depends on the individual dog Ive seen an Akita whip the hell out of a pitbull, but Ive seen pitbulls that I know that same Akita would not stand a chance against.Depends on health and the dogs individual demeanor and the trainer or owner. You really cant make that call

owners treat them badly they would think that
you are going to harm them that's why sometimes they should be treated with respect
and love and they will love you back won't they?so remember these important notes.

Okay for one the pitbull breed is a bad guard dog they will just bark and bark while the stranger is outside but lead him to the vcr when he gets in,,,but back to the point of the site,,i like both and i think they are both the same dog if brought up rite, they can both do some damage and they both could scare ppl, i think rotts are the number one gaurd dog but mastiffs are next on my list,,,

The dogue de bordeaux tends to be a better guard dog..on average. But it also depends on training, the dogue is usualy larger and more aggressive and will bite however a bullmastiff will naturally knock down an intruder and hold him there.
Your choice...good luck.

Bull mastiffs and french mastiffs ,both are wonderful guard dogs but bulls stand a little higher in guarding abilities. All the dogs have natural instincts but early socializing and training make a better guard as well as family dog.I have seen many bulls scaring people but many lovely and friendly also .bulls have a scary eyes. though the breed is friendly.so i think you should better go for a bull mastiff for both aspect.

cheers

I think either would make a good guard dog...because the fact of the matter is: Any dog can be a "watch dog" if it has been put through the correct type of training!!! However, "quarding" comes more naturally to breeds that have been bred to do so. In my opinion, German Shepards make excellent "dog protectors". But as stated above ANY dog can't be trained to do anything.

The Dogue de Bordeaux has the luxury of not being influenced by the AKC and its appearance over function policy.  Therefore, the Dogue de Bordeaux along with the American Bulldogs, Neapolitan Mastiffs, Presa Canarios, and other rare breeds still retain the better guarding instinct.  The boxer was bred for guarding....but show me an AKC boxer that can guard - not!

The Bullmastiff was bred to genetically possess the instincts of a "guard dog."  If you do not train the dog it will still exhibit protective behaviors.  It has an undershot bite that keeps its jaw from clamping down with the unrestricted power of a pitbull.  Meaning that when a pitbull is just playing (let's say with your kid) it is not in control or even aware that it is crushing bones or tearing flesh. On the other hand a Bullmastiff and even a Dogue De Bordeaux have a more predictable behavior and a genetic makeup that makes their behaviors more predictable.  The Pitbull was bred to be a "fighting dog." The Bullmastiff was bred to be a guard dog.  The Dogue De Bordeaux was originally a war dog but the breed was killed off during WWII by the Germans and today's breed is a genetic reconstruction of the former breed which is very close to the makeup of the Bullmastiff.  I have had Bullmastiffs in the past and currently have a Dogue De Bordeaux, but my experience with these dogs only comes as a result of the variables from the environment in which I provided them.

I would not train either Breed for guarding . I own a DDB and he is as sweet as pie. Knock on the door he barks once. Open the door if he does not know you he will growl and charge until you stop. Come through the side gate he will not stop his attack until you are 100 feet from the home. Both are natural guardians. You want a trianed guard dog get a German shepard they respond best to being called off. DDB and Bull mastiffs from what ive read do not respond well to attack training as they usally do not stop. 150 pound DDB or mastiff will put you in prison for man slaughter

You want a Guard Dog Buy a German sheppard. I own a Dogue De bordeaux. One of the most loyal dogs ive seen. Training for Guarding  ive been Told is not recomended, they do not call of well . 135 160 pound male will go till the death ive heard from several breeders. My male is not the dominant of the litter and is Submissive. he tolerates new people if they knock on the door and enter whith my wife or i answering. anyone opening the door that does not live there is greated with a charge and growl. Enter the side gate and he will attack until you are of the drive way. Ive heard the Same about Bullies too both are very close in temperment

I raise gaurd dogs for my goats. The breed is important but the dogs personality is more important. My female akbash is smaller than my male and people are more afraid of her because she is serious and shows it. Look for a dominant puppy.

any decent size dog can be a good gaurd dog.  they have to establish their territory, and its theirs to defend.  a good alpha dog will be more of a leader and want to take care of everyone.  dont get a pitbull if you have any other dogs, or it might be around other dogs, they arent safe with being around other dogs for extended period of time

Dogue De Bordeaux is a slightly stronger breed, the Bullmastiff is usually more athletic.  These dog have very similar behavior and intelligence. The better guard dog depends more on the behavior guard modification techinuques that were implemented prior to an incident.  So it would be the training the dog has had rather than the breed.  The Fila Mastiff and Tibetan Mastiff's are better guard dogs and are less pet like.  A guard dog should not be a pet dog.  Bullmastiff and Dogues no longer have the same ferious behavior that they once had.  But for most overall purposes they are both efficient guard dogs for the average person.

I love both dogs. I've had both kinds. I couldn't choose. Both have done great at protecting my children from strangers at the door and force themselves to be first to greet the guest. I love them. Although I have to disagree with the Pit Bull comment. I would gladly take a mastiff over a pit bull any day. I have known some wonderful pit bulls that suddenly snap and attack their owners. I'm sorry. They just aren't for me or my family.

I dont know what the other people are talking about completly, because if you want a good gaurd dog you've got to find the dog that is bigger and training isnt really a situation because you just put the dog in the yard from puppy to adulthood and it will attack whoevers on its territory. I would definitly get a male.

Bull Mastiff Males -- 25 to 27 inches at the shoulders, and from 110 to 130 pounds

Dogue De Boureaux Males -- 23¨ö to 26¨ö inches at the shoulders, and 90 to 110 pounds.

I would chose a Bull Masstiff not only because its bigger and weighs more, but because the are fearsome dogs. And I ¢¾ em.

you don't want to train a dog to be GUARD DOG  unless you own a junkyard or simuler, esspecially if you have alot of company and kids in your family that come around your house alot.
you have to realize that guard dogs are serious weapons, no matter how you see it and they act mostly on their own judgement. What do you want a guard dog for? but any workingdog breed , like sheperds, bulldogs and alot more would work well. I would consider talking to a exsperienced trainer before you decide that kind of a big step.
good luck****

a bull mastiff is slower but more powerful.  also bull mastiffs have been shot as many as 11 times before they stopped an attack.  i dont know what caliber but it was a handgun.  i am partial to bull mastiffs.  and i own a pit bull. pits are not generaly aggressive twards people but other dogs.  i have seen with my own eyes police raids and pits in a house did nothing but yet were some of the meanest of dogs i have ever seen.  a bull mastiff will not have it.  they will have to kill that dog.   but the bull mastiff is hard to kill, bigger, determined, and DOSE NOT BACK DOWN!!!  this is just my two cents.

They are very similar breed. Not much differences. The bull mastiff is more territorial and more aggressive, but the Bordeaux is a slightly bigger and a more powerful breed that doesn't mess around when on guard duties. They are both no non-sense breed that are a cut above most guard breeds.Their only strong competition are the rottweiler and the Neapolitan mastiff.A pit bull is not in the same league as these dogs when it comes on to top guard dogs. Its way too small and is not strong enough or able to hold and stop a  big intruder.I've worked for years with most of these breed in attack training.

I believe that the bull mastiff is the better dog all together, between these two dogs the dogue de bordeaux suffers from all sorts of problems eg breathing problems the way they have been bred over the years which makes it not that handy the bull mastiff on the other hand is one of the oldest dogs in history where it hasnt been bred out for its job which makes it the better dog all together.

My friend has a bull mastiff and it is not a very strong guard dog. I have a bordeaux and he is a top notch guard dog, he would mangle anyone unwanted entered. period.  But I also believe it depends on the breeder and how you raise the animal. Many of these dogs had the ferousity bread out of them.
