How do I know when my chihuahua is in heat?

She will have a smelly discharge from her bottom and her female parts will swell up rather spectacularly.  I suggest spaying for all animals who are not part of an experienced breeders program.  Chihuahuas are very fragile and even experienced breeders sometimes lose the mother and/or the litter.

The curse of Eve....Oh the joys of womanhood. My little Chalupa actually gets a  feminine fishy smell. Simular to human women. She has only had her period once but already I nick named her "Little stinky butt"  during that time of her cycle.

my chi is in heat and i was wondering if that could cause her to be more tired, or cause her to have less of an appetite. Also the white of her eyes are a little bloodshot...

My chi is in heat and I can tell you that she is normally a very hyper and outgoing puppy.  She has been very tired and sleepy and is actively bleeding.  Her eyes also look a little more bloodshot than normal, I suspect that's because she's a little more sleepy than normal.  I don't know if this is common, but the fact that both my dog and yours have the same symptoms leaves me to suspect that this is common.  She just turned six months and I have not been able to spay her.  Now I have to wait three months.  Talk to your vet if you wish to spay her.  They say that if you don't wait out the three months, then complications due to blood loss can occur with surgery.

This isn't a answer it's a question ok here goes "When girl chis are in heat and u breed her how do you know if she is pregnant?" thanks

I would get a second opinion as to whether you have to wait three months.  That sounds more like the vet wanting to make sure she doesn't have a litter (which takes two months before conception and birth, followed by recovery time).  Other dog owners I know have had the operation done as soon as the heat cycle ends, with no ill effects.

You know she's pregnant when she starts getting rounder, or you can have the vet give her an ultrasound.  Both methods mean waiting for a while after the breeding.  I would encourage you not to breed your female unless you are experienced, many females should not ever be bred, and even the most experienced breeders sometimes lose the mother and/or the litter.

Hi, I have been reading your e-mails I have a female chihuahua her name is pinina she is 5 months and I really don't know much about females except that I would never take her right to bare puppies away from her. she seems to start to smell a little fishy at what age do they start to change?

My chi was given to us and I suspect she is roughly a year old. She just went into heat after having her for 2 weeks, She started to pee inside, hump everyone and she is very lethargic, however runs like the wind while out for a walk. But she through up allot in the beginning, sleeps more and eats less. She seems depressed. She doesn't really smell bad but she started out with a swelling vulva and then she bled for about a week. Her vulva is still very swelled up and she licks herself allot. I am worried about an infection. Is it normal for her to lick herself so much. I am guessing she is cleaning herself up.

I also think the best thing to do is to spay your female. My female did get pregnant and b/c of chihuahua puppies having such large heads could not deliver them.I took her to the vet and although they couldnt save the puppies they did save her (she also almost didnt make it).It was one of the worst experiences ever!!

I checked with my vet and he said that it would be better to wait until they finish bleeding, but the surgery to get her spayed can be done during her cycle. The vets just charge a little more than normal.

TODAY MY CHI "MAKI" STARTED HER FIRST HEAT PERIOD. TWO DAYS BEFORE SHE HAD A VERY STRANGE BEHAVIOR, LIKE GOING AROUND THE HOUSE AND SMELLING EVERYWHERE. YESTERDAY, THE FISHY SMELL STARTED AND TODAY BLOOD (VERY LITTLE).

SINCE THIS IS MY FIRST DOG, I ALSO WONDERED ABOUT THIS. BUT MY FRIEND, IF YOU ARE VERY ATTACHED TO YOUR CHI, BELIEVE ME YOU WILL NOTICE. =)

This is a question too- my little chihuahua is 7 months old and she is soo sleepy lately! She doesn't even want to play fetch which is very uncommon. Her eyes are also a little bloodshot. She's eating fine, but could these be signs of going into heat soon?

it may take up to 1 1/2 months after conception,or more to really know for sure if she's pregnant, less time if you go to a vet and get a ultra sound done.

My chi has the same symptoms, like loss of appettite, she is sleeping a lot and she doesn't have much engery. But she not yet started to bleed. I'm hopeing that it is heat, because this would be her first. I'm hoping that this behavior is common, because I have been very worried about her loss of appetite.

You will know she is in heat because her female parts swell up enormously.  She also bleeds alot.  I  also noticed that she is not as active as she usually is and she does not have a good appetite.

My Chihuahua Kita is only 7 months old and had an apt in 2 weeks to be fixed but went into heat before we could get her fixed. Our vet said to call when she is out and they would schedule her next apt 4-6 weeks out to let all of the swelling to go down. And to expect her to be in for about a month. Is that correct even if she is the runt? She weighs 4.14 pounds....

I have a question to some of you who have posted here,
How do you get experience in breeding a Chihuahua if everyone keeps telling you not to do if you've never bred them before?
I want to breed my chihuahuas I have 3 and I am new to this, I just want to breed them 1 time each and then have them fixed. But where do I go to get that experience? I have read anything I can find on breeding small dogs from Internet to Library. So if some of you could please help I would appreciate it very much.
Thank You, Brondie

Fajita is my chihuahua's name.  She has her first period.  But she's been in heat before, without the bleeding.  This time she's bleeding and leaves stains everywhere, so I keep her in the kennel with a towel.

My question is how long does the bleeding last?  Is it like us, a week, or will it be longer?

She normally sleeps in the bed with us,but we can't have her there now.  I know this makes her sad.
