Why are t.v soaps called "soaps"

A quick search on dictionary.com reveals the following:

"From its originally having been sponsored by soap companies."

If I'm not mistaken, Pete, the old soaps used to come on the radio.  Like James said, they were sponsored by the soap companies

its called that because the people that invented it liked to eat soap.

Because back in the day women would watch soaps while washing and or drying clothes sometimes they would wash dishes floors etc

t.v. soaps are called soaps because some t.v. soaps are dirty and need to be washed and you can do that with soap so they decided to call it ''soaps''!!!

they are secretly telling you your ass stinks so you need soap to wash you nasty ass soap cleans booty use it.

the real answer is because the companies who sponsored the afternoon shows were all soap companies - Procter & Gamble most notably...

"Soap Operas" - a coined phrase pertaining to an ongoing daytime dramatic television series, usually aired during weekday afternoons. Sponsoring advertisers of the TV programs created "operas" to cater to the audience - by and large consisting of housewives. That was the market, soap was only one type of commodity marketed, but the name intones products that household managers were likely to be the decision-makers regarding purchase.

I am 63.  When I was a boy, the majority of television shows were supported by advertising commercials for detergent and soap companies.  Fab, Fels Naptha, Joy, Ivory Soap and Tide were among those represented.
