I have not been able to have caffeine or any other stimulants for years. I did always love chocolate , tea, etc...  However, trying to find decaf chocolate will not solve my problem. Decaf still has some level of caffeine, because you can not remove all of it once it is in. I can have none!!!!! If there is ever a stimulant / caffeine free chocolate out there, I'd love it!! Hershey's needs to get busy!!!!!!

I am afraid that at the moment this is impossible; however, new research being conducted in Japan has removed the caffeine enzyme from coffee beans; a relative of cocoa beans so it should in a few years be possible.

According to Ovaltine's 800 number their Chocolate Malt drink is over 99% caffeine free.
Recommend calling to be sure.  Their number is 800-422-0099 9am to 5pm, EST.
Their cocoa is processed with alkali.  Maybe that is what makes it decaffeinated..
Try calling other 800's on labels.

Ive been searching for years for caff. free choc. but no luck, i can t understand if they can make these drinks caff. free, why they cant make a candy bar.

My caffeine intolerance occurs as full depression.  Even tried Prozac without success.  It takes almost exactly seven days after a single dose of soda, coffee, tea, or chocolate to appear and doesn't lift for two to three months!

If any of you have this form of intolerance, you'll find that the only way to avoid it is to read every label carefully.  Once it hits you, you have to realize that depression is a medical condition that isn't caused by anything in your life.  Don't make any life-changing decisions until you feel normal again.  I recently slipped back under when I drank a brand of Root Beer that had caffeine (most Root Beer doesn't--so don't drink Barq's).

I am sensitive to caffeine, and haven't been able to have chocolate and other caffeinated foods for nine years. When I eat anything with caffeine I get instantaneous digestive pain and diarrhea. If this is the reaction you get, then there are several great chocolate alternatives out there. Basically, if any of the ingredients have the word chocolate in them, it's got too much caffeine. Anything that says Cocoa Processed with Alkali, or Dutch processed cocoa is fine. Usually if it's just cocoa I don't have problems either. The downside is that cocoa products don't have the same rich flavor that chocolate has, but it can still take care of cravings. I have found one brand of chocolate chips that has cocoa and cocoa butter, which tastes fantastic, but doesn't bother me. There are a lot of cake mixes that are fine, and cheaper chocolate candies and ice cream usually have only these safer ingredients.

Good luck!

The vital parameters are:
1. No (or much less) caffeine than ordinary chocolate
2. All the theobromine and phenethylamine must be present, which are the chemicals that are psychoactive and soothing.
Do the white chocolate and carob products mentioned on this list have these qualities?
We gotta get the chemistry down here!

I believe the reason that they can separate caffeine from sodas but not from chocolate is because caffeine is naturally found in chocolate.  Soda companies ADD caffeine to their products to make you addicted to them. (It's actually quite evil if you think about it.)  That's why they are able to make caffeine free sodas - because sodas don't have caffeine in them until it is added.

As far as I know, the closest thing to decaf chocolate would be carob chocolate. It has a similar taste to chocolate, but it's made from a different plant and contains no caffeine. A family friend is intolerant to caffeine and I remember always giving her stuff made with carob. There's plenty on stuff on the internet about carob, so look it up quickly, see where you can find some, and try it! I hope this helps some of you!

There is a fat free, sugar free, caffeine free chocolate powder called WonderSlim. It's found in many healthfood stores.

I found a recipe from a low-carb website for making chocolate candy with it, organic coconut oil, stevia or some other sweetener that isn't sugar, nuts, if you want, coconut flakes and non-alcoholic flavoring. I'm gonna try making it this weekend! It isn't deep, dark, but something might be better than nothing!

Great news for all caffeine-free chocolate "purists"! Because I stopped caffeine and chocolate 10 years ago due to heart problems, I have been on a continual search for caffeine-free chocolate.  I have discovered a small candy shop in Cumberland Md. call "Timeless Treats" (ph. 301-724-7773) (www.timelesstreats.com) which sells a line of candy dubbed "white chocolate" when in reality it has NO chocolate in it and I can vouch that it is delicious and does indeed taste LIKE white chocolate.. The store owners do not like real white chocolate but prefer this other product. It is made of the following ingredients: palm oil, non-fat dry milk, whole milk, lecithin, vanillin and salt. Happy chocolating!

Chocolate contains both caffeine and theobromine (a metabolite of caffeine), which are chemically related compounds from the methylxanthine group. Caffeine is found in coffee, and to a lesser extent, in tea, cola and chocolate products. In fact, the caffeine in chocolate is negligible ‚ 1.3 oz. of DOVE® Milk Chocolate and 1.3 oz. of DOVE® Dark Chocolate have approximately 4 mg. and 22 mg. of caffeine, respectively (1), compared to 120 mg. of caffeine in the average cup of coffee. In contrast, it is theobromine that is found in the greatest quantities in chocolate (table 2).

It is added by manufacturers.

Even if it does prove possible to decaffeinate chocolate, it is not the caffeine in it that is toxic to dogs.  It is a chemical called theobromine.  A source I found said states that one ounce of milk chocolate per pound of a dogs body weight constitutes a toxic dose.  Semisweet chocolate contains more than three times as much theobromine as milk chocolate, so the toxic dosage is one third as much.  Even at lower dosages, it can cause digestive problems and other symptoms.

The answer to the question of dogs and chocolate, then, is NO!  And caffeine is not the issue.  So no matter how much your dog seems to want the stuff, SAY NO!

Ross-direct may say that their white chocolate is caffeine free, but so is all white chocolate. Hence the lack of complaints when caffeine intolerant people eat white chocolate. Fact is, caffeine is contained in the cocoa solids (the brown stuff in chocolate) so the darker the chocolate, the more caffeine AND THEOBROMINE (which is related to caffeine, and present in much higher quantities in chocolate). For my research, I've been trying to lay my hands on caffeine/theobromine-free chocolate (no not of the white variety) but this has proven impossible. So to all people asking for caffeine-free chocolate I say: stick to white, and if you look around there are many interesting varieties of white chocolate so enjoy what you can have rather than resent what you can't have!
Good luck
Dr Chocolate

Ok, I haven't been able to ingest caffiene for over 15 yrs. First of all, white chocolate does not have caffiene. Also, Nestle makes a chocolate syrup that is 99% caffiene free. This was a huge step for man kind. All of the other products such as hot cocoa have alreay been deifned on this site. So go purchase that Neslte chocolate syrup. It may be enough to tide you over until they release a caffiene free chocolate.

White Chocolate never has caffeine because it doesn't contain "cocoa".  The wording caffeine free white chocolate is redundant.  You can buy any brand of white chocolate and it won't contain caffeine.  For that matter, you can buy chocolate that's orange or green and because it doesn't have cocoa in it - it has no caffeine.

To TRB.
Thanks so much for posting to 800# for Ovaltine.

Years ago I bought the decaf (99% free) Ovlatine and was most grateful to have it. Caffeine causes my heart to race more than usual as I have heart problems. For whatever reason, I haven't been able to find any decaf Ovaltine in stores or on-line. I'd checked the label on an old container, but the "questions/comments" phone number they had listed was out of service.
So, after many hours of on-line searching w/o any luck, I just gave up. The only things I saw on-line were very expensive Ovaltine malt mixes in vintage packaging, or other mixes that claimed to taste just like Ovaltine. And these items were listed to be sold in Great Britain Now, with the number you have here, I hope to get in touch and get some answers from the Ovaltine company.

Someone mentioned Carob. I've tried the store bought brownies and chocolate drinks. They're okay; kind of a mixture taste of dark chocolate and cocoa.

Thanks again.

To address the person concerning giving a dog chocolate, it is not just the caffeine in the milk or dark chocolate that can kill dogs, it is another component in it that causes the problem although the caffeine reacts with it to make things worse.

Please make the distinction between chocolate and cocoa.  All chocolate  does not have cocoa.  Cocoa has caffeine, that is why true hot cocoa, not the milky drink, is made/used like coffee. You can find places on the net that give you caffeine amounts for different types of products including those with cocoa in them.

Chocolate Substitute- Carob!!!!!!!!! I just found out about it. It is caffeine free and healthier than chocolate. The taste is pretty similar. I have used the carob powder and the unsweetened morsels. I do not recommend the unsweetened morsels. I haven't tried the sweetened one yet. The Carob powder is a great alternative to chocolate. I found the Carob at my local health foods store. I also referenced several websites by googling" "carob vs. chocolate"

The only caffeine-free chocolate is white chocolate. This is because caffeine (and the related theobromine) is confined to the cocoa solids (the brown stuff) in chocolate. White chocolate does not contain cocoa solids, it is the cocoa butter with milk powder and sugar. It still has the creaminess of milk chocolate, and is from what I can tell the best alternative to milk chocolate. Decaf chocolate is, to my knowledge, not available - yet! Who knows...

Caffeine gives me migraines so I have had to give up chocolate as well.  I was told that white chocolate really isn't "chocolate" at all and contains no caffeine.  It is the cocoa bean that has caffeine in it and since white chocolate doesn't have that in it I can eat it.  Caffeine free chocolate isn't available right now but as a few other people have mentioned some chocolate drink mixes are 99% caffeine free. Nesquik is my favorite.

Yeah guys, this has been mentioned once before but I'll just bring it up again...

Try Carob Chips!! - tastes somewhat similar to sweetened cocoa, but contains no caffeine or other psychoactive substances and is often used as a hypoallergenic, drug-free substitute. Try it, and if u love it, then u just found gold! I know I love it :)

I also suffer from migraines due to caffeine. However, I have discovered Nesquik chocolate syrup. The is 99% caffeine free. Other than that I eat white chocolate candy bars, Reese's peanut butter cups, twix (limited edition) and kit kat. Good luck!

White chocolate is not actually chocolate.  It is made from cocoa butter which tastes (a bit) like chocolate, milk, and sugar.

White chocolate does not have caffeine because it's not really chocolate.  Carob seems to be the only choice for those who can't eat caffeine.  Try vegan websits like pangea.com to find decent carob products.

I'd also love some caffeine free choc. I haven't had chocolate for about a year now. It gives me a racing heart and palpitations. It took ages to figure out i didn't actually have a serious heart problem but gave up choc and fizzy drinks and haven't had many probs since. Strange how it came on so suddenly.

Pleeeeeeease make some Caffeine free chocolate hehe.

Nestle hot cocoa is 99.9% caffeine free.  It says so in tiny letters on the side of the box.  Also, Nestle Nesquick is 99.9% caf-free as well.

White chocolate is not made from chocolate so it is safe from caffeine.  That's what a candy maker at Hebert's Candy told me.

Chocolate cannot be decaffeinated because it contains no caffeine. It contains another stimulant called Theobromine which has a very similar chemical composition but very different effects. Very few people are actually allergic to Theobromine, but many people are allergic to caffeine. Some chocolate products have caffeine in their additives, so you do some research about who you buy your chocolate from and find out what else they put in it, but chocolate as it occurs naturally has no caffeine. I would suggest buying a purer, mostly cacao chocolate with very few additives. Upscale chocolate companies will put all of the additives and their contents on their labels.

Caffeine can not be removed from chocolate. Chocolate has a chemical in it that breaks down into caffeine during digestion + caffiene :(  My poor hubby has a sensitivity to0.

like the rest of you, i too am caffeine intolerant. it has a negative effect on my parasympathetic nervous system: my skin feels fuzzy (very textured) all over, my hair falls out, i have severe facial tics, and i get uncontrollable flailing of my limbs (usually the legs, but sometimes the arms too). it's pretty awful.

thinking it to be caffeine free, i ate white chocolate tonight. to my surprise, i have that all over fuzzy skin feeling. that's what made me get on line to find out if there is caffeine in white chocolate.

based upon the responses posted, i'm hoping that my reaction to white chocolate will be less severe than that to milk or dark chocolate and that my symptoms will not escalate.

white chocolate is naturally decaffinated. the cocoa solids in the cacao bean are what contains the caffiene. white chocolate is made from the cocoa butter, which contains very little, if any caffiene.

White Chocolate has no caffeine because it has no cocoa in it(cocoa butter without the good stuff) Carob tastes somewhat chocolate like but it is not great. Currently there is no caffeine free true chocolate, and I have yet to find a decaf chocolate. Chocolate is actually pretty low in caffeine as it is. Around 45g of milk chocolate has about 3mg(dark is about three times that.)

I can't have any caffeine; it gives me horrible heart palpitations for days after wards. However, I eat white chocolate. It does not contain caffeine; the name is misleading because it is not in fact chocolate. Cocoa butter is not the same as cocoa which is what is in chocolate.  I have absolutely no problem eating white chocolate except that it tastes nothing at all like dark chocolate!  If ever a caffeine-free variety is made, I for one will eat it if I can.

Caffeine
Some people are surprised to learn that chocolate is not high in caffeine. A typical 8-ounce glass of chocolate milk has the same amount of caffeine as a cup of decaffeinated coffee. A HERSHEY'S chocolate bar (1.55 ounce) contains about 10 mg of caffeine - slightly more than a cup of decaffeinated coffee, but much less than that found in regular coffee, tea, and some soft drinks. The small amount of caffeine in chocolate occurs naturally in cocoa beans.

Wonderslim Cocoa was caffiene free and I used to make all sorts of chocolate treats with it, but they changed their processing and even though they still claim to be 99.7% caffiene-free, I had a bad caffiene reaction. It is distributed by Marin Food Industries, P O Box 609, Byron, CA  94514.  I tried emailing, never heard back.  Maybe if we got a petition together they would go back to the old process.
