A male will breed any time allowed but a female will only breed while she is in heat. This happens about twice a year and is identified by swelling of the vulva and vaginal discharge. Once she starts showing these signs she will not breed immediately. Some dogs will breed from the first day of these signs while others won't for over two weeks! The time slot that they will allow breeding ranges from 1-17 days! Each dog is different in this but the good news is that there is a pattern. Once you figure out how long her heat was and the space between the heats she will stick to that pattern. Good luck! If you need more help just email me at stanishas@aol.com

Givin time your female will let the male mate with her... Having expirience female dogs sort of like to growl and bark at the male because the females not always want to mate.. But when they do they will let the male mate with them and afterwards (sometime) you want to walk the female in a fast walk to get *it* running in her system.
I hope  whenever they do mate that the birth comes along easy and the mother and whelps are healthy
     bye,...

to entice her i suggeset that when she is in fukll heat you stroke her stomach and back with your hand and have the male dog that she will be breeding with present then when she seems calm hold her steady and allow  the male to mount her. If she tries to move around push the male dog closer to her and it should calm her down. This worked wonderfully when i was breeding my two labs.

How to Restrain a female so the male can mount
Hold her head in the crook of your armpit
Hold very tight it immobilizes her
In hard cases I put a leash on them and sit on it to keep her more restrained
If her head is low she has a harder time sitting down
Use your left hand to pull her tail to the side
Your right hand goes under her belly and at the same time you hold her vulva apart for penatration
To intice the male wiggle her rear end
Try to be quiet, so you do not upset the male and keep your arms out of his way
Now with your third arm. I want you to guide the male in
Once you feel him enter her with your fingers and he will have a smother faster rhythm
Than I want you to hold his butt in tight.( this is helpful when the males are much smaller not in larger breeds)
This is a lot of work. This part may last 30 minutes and I am usually in a sweat by now.
My body is contantly straining to hold her still and help him aim.

i disagree with the above person who stated that a male will bred any female that is ready and in heat... after 40 years breeding dogs.. i have seen many males refuse to breed particular females even when in full heat, and fertile.. they can have favorites. it also depends on the social hierarchy's of your pack.. in any case A.I. is a resonable solution for a female when the male just plain refuses to breed her.

My male maltese is humping the female but doesn't seem to get close enough.  How can I assist him.  He's always about an inch too far.  Also the female seems to want to sit down once the male is on her.

if your looking for a male to mate with your female dog my suggestions is to play with your while she's standing up so that she can maintain that position after wards bring in the male and put him behind her, still playing with your dog hold her still and let the male take his place mating with her if she tries to jerk away hold her  a Little tighter in-tell you think the sperms entered her vagina and you have puppies!!

I have had two cocker spaniels for about 4-5 years since they were pups. One is a 4 year old female cocker and the other is  5 year old male cocker.  I believe both dogs have never had sex.  The female will not let the male dog have sex with her and sits down everytime he tries to mount her.  How do I make the dogs mate?

Good luck with breeding your dog and make sure that your dog is in a comfortable environment so she is not stressed. I have had a lot of luck with litters from my lab when I give her a long belly rub before I begin the male encounter. It soothes her

If your dog will not breed try to relax the female with a treat and have your male dog in the same room as your female and hold the female and let the sex begin!
