Our Lab has had split nail twice with the painful removal of the nails by the vet.  Why is this happening and can we prevent it?  We keep his nails trimmed(this was recently done by our vet)  and the trimmed nail split with resulting pain and infection.  We live in a wooded setting and there is no pavement for him to run on, only soft mulch.   I would appreciate any wisdom on this subject.

dont know if this will help but i used to have a pony with the same problem and i used something called cornucresin it stopped the crack spreading and the new hoof was strong and healthy, it also made my nails very strong. you would just rub a small amount into the nail daily, im convinced it will help. you can buy it from any tack shop.
