Xopenex is a bronchodilator medication that, like Albuterol, is a beta-2 agonist that helps to relax the smooth muscle that line patient airways. The side effects of Xopenex are similar to those of Albuterol and neither generally cause serious cardiac side effects. Some patients are, however, sensitive to some of these beta-2 agonist medications and experience an elevated heart rate. Xopenex would be a logical substitute for Albuterol in that they both have similar actions. There are actually many medications that could replace Albuterol in your treatment routine and Xopenex is a good example of one such drug.

As a Respiratory Therapist I see Xopenex open up the lungs of patients continuous nebulization of racemic albuterol couldn't touch.  The difference is great!  As an asthmatic using the Xopenex inhaler doesn't effect my body in any way - oh yeah except I can breathe!
