Early American colonies depended mostly on slaves to grow the crops and do work.  Slavery of African Americans started in about 1698.  There were Indentured Servants and Native American Slaves in America before. Indentured Servants, Native Americans, and Africans were treated as sub-human that came to work in harsh condition.  Native Americans escaped easily, Indentured Servants had a choice of coming or not coming to the colonies from Europe when they hear news/info about the life as Indentured Servants there.  But Africans couldn't escape, nor hear nor transmit news about their life in the colonies to their homeland in Africa.  They were captured and brought there to work till death.  Most of them die of disease, maltreatment, poor living conditions, shock.  Some worked for few years and died, it wasn't uncommon.  Early laws enabled masters to punish or to kill slaves if they don't listen to the master.  There were two revolts by slaves that was most noticable, one was the New York Revolt in 1712, and the other was the Stono Rebellion in 1739.

Slavery comes from the word slav, the name of groups of Eastern European peoples.
Slavery is when people are taken without a choice to work for someone with out any pay. Slavery went on from the early 1800s' to the mid 1900s'. Slaves were always African American.
