The french have a beautiful culture, fine wine and food, they like to sit down and enjoy a meal rather than sitting on a park bench that a bird just shat on. Rather than a burger and fries for lunch they want real cuisine, and why wash it down with a litre of coke when you could have a beautiful glass of wine?
The west tried to barge on through with their culture without taking cultural differences into account.
The west wanted to give the french 'a taste of America', the French didn't want it, sure they wanted rides, but with little customary things like excessive smiling, the French took offense to like they were being laughed at, whereas in the west it's polite.
