I have a five dollar bill from 1934. On the back of the bill it does not say "in God we trust" like all new five dollar bills. Is this strange? Or do all five dollar bills from this time not say it?
Thanks

I have one of those $5 bills from 1934. It does not say In God We Trust on the back either. My guess is they didn't have that on them back then. I checked on e-bay to see if it is worth anything. It doesn't seem to be worth much more the 5 bucks.

I don't have an answer either...however, I also have a five dollar bill from 1934.  Below Lincoln, it reads "WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND FIVE DOLLARS".  Also in the top left corner it reads "THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE AND IS REDEEMABLE IN LAWFUL MONEY AT THE UNITED STATES TREASURY, OR AT ANY FEDERAL RESERVE BANK".  Below that is a seal with the letter A in the center, and around that it says "THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS".  Below that is A22984894A. To the bottom right of Lincoln it says "SERIES OF 1934" and under that it says "WASHINGTON, D.C.".

Like stated in the previous post, this dollar does not say "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the back either.

If you should happen to know any more about this dollar could you let me know?  mab1429@hotmail.com

In 1954 the Department of the Treasury made a law that every new bill must have "In God We Trust".

"In God We Trust" was not made an official motto of the United States until 1956, and the motto did not appear on paper money until 1957.

The 1934 five dollar bill does not have the In God we Trust.  That slogan does not appear on the bill until 1963.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't until the 1950's that they started putting "In God We Trust" on our currency.

The answer is that 'in God we trust' was not put on money until the 1950's as a combat to communism. What you have is most likely rare, so keep it. because of the life of most paper money most older bills are in bad condition or most likely destroyed if they get to the banks.
