on start up my vw golf gti 1989 ltr produces a tapping noise...

on start up my vw golf gti 1989 ltr produces a tapping noise which I have presumed are tappets, how do you over come this noise because they are hyraulic tappets?

What happens is over time the tappets are unable to hold the oil pressure when you switch off. So it takes a while for them to build the pressure back up when you start up.
The only cure I know of is to replace the offending tappets which cost around £5 each. It can sometimes work to blip the throttle a couple of minutes after start up; which increases oil pressure momentarily and thus fills the tappet up.
