What are the signs of a golden retriever being in heat? My golden is 5 months old and I was wondering if she could be in heat. She tries to attract our neighbors male dogs attention and get him to chase her. I'm not sure if she is just being friendly or if she's in heat.

She is probably being friendly. The signs of heat are pretty easy to spot. Her vulva will grow very large and she will bleed from it. Her nipples will also get a bit bigger and she may become more picky with food. Make sure you don't let her breed this young though! Her body isn't mature. She will probably go into heat between the age of 6-10 months but shouldn't be bred until two years of age. You can get diapers to prevent breeding and keep messes from the blood to a minimum. jefferspet.com has them. Sorry it took so long to answer. I lost the web address I had to check on these sites. :( Good luck! Tanisha

At 18 months my golden retriever may have conceived at the latter part of her heat cycle.  I did plan to breed her, but not until she was in her fourth or fifth heat.  She is acting very tired (unusually) and has had a lack of appetite (she is eating about half of what she normally does).  I am wondering if these are common signs of pregnancy or if you can provide any helpful hints.  We are at exactly 30 days so I hope to get her to the vets next week for an ultrasound.

Thank You,
Sheila

I was wanting to breed my Golden Retrievers (Candy) (Ginger), but I don't know when I can tell when they are in heat. One is about 3 years old and the other is 12 months old.

I have a Golden retriever that I think may be pregnant.  I got her only 1 month ago, so I do not know when her last heat was.  She is a rescue stray dog.  On the initial vet visit they thought she might be just coming off her heat, that was 1 month ago.  They did not ultrasound her, but thought it could be possible for her to be pregnant.  How do I tell if she is pregnant w/o going to the vet to pay for an ultrasound?  What are the signs to look for.
