My dog died 2 days after starting the drug Cephalexin. I was told she had liver disease. Could the liver disease have been solely brought about from the drug in a two day period.

My Rottie was put on Cephalexin and went downhill quickly..I don't know where you're from or which vet you use, but am wondering IF there's a BAD batch of cephalexin being used? I've learned the other day from a neighbor who goes to the same vet and her dog was on the same antibiotic, also became ill.

Nikki-

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your pup.

The cephalexin likely didn't cause your dog's liver disease.  However, according to the label (see info below), it sounds as if cephalexin can cause problems in dogs (and people) who already have liver disease.  Most likely, your pup had liver disease, and then had a reaction to the cephalexin.

I did some reading on this, because my dog has been prescribed cephalexin as well.

According to the Long Beach animal hospital site, http://www.lbah.com/liver.htm

"...A CBC (complete blood count) and BCP (biochemistry panel) should be run on every pet 8 years of age or more, especially if they have any of the symptoms of liver disease."  My dog is 12 now, so I am very concerned about her taking prescriptions that might interact with problems she already has.

Thank you so much for sharing this and letting others know.  Again, I am sorry for your loss.

FROM MEDLINE:
Why is this medication prescribed?
Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia and bone, ear, skin, and urinary tract infections. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

How should this medicine be used?
Cephalexin comes as a capsule, tablet, and liquid to take by mouth. It is usually taken every 6 hours (four times a day) or every 12 hours (twice a day) for 7-10 days. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take cephalexin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Continue to take cephalexin even if you feel well. Do not stop taking cephalexin without talking to your doctor.

*What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking cephalexin, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to cephalexin or any other cephalosporin antibiotic such as cefadroxil (Duricef) or cephradine (Velosef), penicillin, or any other drugs.
tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially other antibiotics, anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin), probenecid (Benemid), and vitamins.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease, colitis, or stomach problems.

*What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Cephalexin may cause an upset stomach. Take cephalexin with food or milk.

What should I do if I forget a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

We had to put our dog down a few days after he was prescribed Cephalexin.  DVM told me he had heart, LIVER and prostrate conditions.  The dog, a blk lab mix, lived in the home with us with no symptoms and was taken to the vet for an open sore on the right hind foot that had not healed.  My opinion is that the Cephalexin KILLED our dog!  And, since this happened a year after your experience, I do NOT think that it is a bad batch of medicine, but a medicine that NEEDS restricted use with a WARNING LABEL outlining this problem, if it is to be prescribed to dogs at all.

Thank all of you for the information. I doubt anyone will see this but I just wanted to say thanks. My dog has finished his 8th day out of 10 and his stomach is bloated and his breathing is getting progressively worse. To tell you the truth I don't know if he's going to make it through the night. I have thrown out the final two days and have my fingers crossed.
