My mom has a yorkie that just turned 1 year and he weighs 10 lbs. The vet told her to be careful he doesn't gain anymore weight because it could cause serious problems. Just be careful with your yorkie.

I have never heard of an 8 week old yorkie weighing that much. It does not sound like a full blooded yorkie to me. Most yorkies are about 1 to 3 lbs at 8 weeks old. Is the yorkie over weight? It sounds like a mixed breed to me.

He's probably not a full blood Yorkie. Mine is 7 months and she weighs 4 pounds. Yours might be a silky mix.

All you people who think big yorkies are not full blood are idiots...If you read the breed history, it was originally breed to be 7-12 lbs to catch rats..The AKC standard for competition is anything under 7lbs..but full blood yorkies can get up to 16 lbs.

I have an 8 year old Yorkie (with the papers to prove it) who weighs 14 lbs. When he was a pup I was concerned that he was growing larger than most dogs of his breed but the vet told me that some breeders are careful to only breed the smallest dogs and some are not. This breed was originally nearly twice as big as they are today when they were used to hut vermin. It is very possible to have a larger full blood Yorkie. Mine is a smart, feisty little dog. He even has his entire tail. Imagine that!

Just some food for thought!  A woman whose children I teach has a purebred Yorkie who weighs 20 lbs.  He has Yorkie coloring and looks like Bengi.  He has papers etc...  Makes you wonder.
But, humans do not necessary inbreed, and look at some of our children.

I heard to use this formula. Weigh your yorkie pup at 14 to 16 weeks. Double that weight and add a 1/2 pound and this will give u a close estimate to what your dogs weight will be as an adult.

I have a Yorkie girl who weighs 2 3/4 lbs at 15 weeks. Doubling that weight to 5 1/2 lbs plus the 1/2 pound. She should be about 6 lbs.
I have another girl from the same litter. She is 4 lbs, so she will be a whooping 8 1/2 lbs, approximately.
I plan on breeding them so this is an excellent size. I will just breed to a smaller male.
Breeding a yorkie under 5 lbs can be very dangerous.

I bred my AKC 8 lb yorkie.  She was bred to a 2 1/2 AKC male.
Her puppies range from 4-8 lbs except for one male, he is 22 lbs.  He is fixed, of course, but he is the smartest, sweetest of them all.  He thinks he is a golden retriever and he loves the swimming pool.
He keeps the pool clean of all toys and when there are no toys, he swims circle non-stop eating the bubbles he makes.  He even dives underwater for those sinking toys.

I don't know if you all misunderstood, or if I did.  The original question wasn't asking about an 8 pound puppy, but an 8 ounce puppy.  That is definitely NOT a huge yorkie baby!

My yorkie is a little more than 12 weeks old and weighs 1 lb and a half. Can you tell me how big she will be when full grown.  She had been eating both canned and dry food.  The last two days she quits eating canned food and only eats dry food (Hill's diet food small bites).  Does dry food give her enough nutrition?  Her ears were down when I got her, then they went up for about 10 days and now they are down again.  I had her ears shaved about one week ago but they are still down.  Will they be up again?  I tried to tape them but she wiggled too much and I could not.

if your pup is 12 weeks old and weighs 1.5lbs. She will probably be 3-3.5lbs at maturity. It's very normal if her ears stand and flap down at this age. She's in a teething stage. She will have erect ears eventually if her ears are thin. On the other hand if she has thick ears, they might not go up unless you help them by taping the ears.

My puppy weighs 1#9oz at 14 weeks. So by your formula she should weigh 4#6ozs does that sound right?  Also HELP! HELP! does anyone clip their own dog?  How do you do it    /  She wiggles all over the place whenever I come near her with a comb or a sissors. Also, someone said they used a mesh hanger.  It went around their middle, and then you lifted them up so feet are off the ground and then you can clip nails and hair.  Ant idea where I can buy something like that?  So far I can't find it on the net.  Any help will be really appreciated!  THANKS! My yorkie is now 11 mos old.  I took him into the vet to get weighed and he is now 11.3 lbs.  His brother from the second litter weighs just over 6lbs and he's 4 mos old.  As far as my vet is concerned, the bigger the better.  He will have less health problems especially when it comes to his legs.  He says the smaller pups have big healt issues.  The person who said they can weigh up to 14-15lbs is absolutely right.  We as Americans have created a toy breed for our own purposes and it is not the original breed size.

I was on this board on 04/13/2004.  My baby will be 6 months in two weeks and she weighs 3lbs 6oz.  I don't think she will grow much bigger as she has only gained 0.3oz in the last 10 day period

The trouble I have is she is chasing my big and older (8yrs 9mos) dog all the time.  At first, it looked like she was just playing, but now it seems she thinks she is the boss in the house.  Any time she sees the big dog she chases him making him jump up the sofa or chair where she cannot reach.  Also anytime I let her out of the crate, the first thing she does is running around looking for the other dog then chasing him around.  I try to catch her to put her in her crate but she runs away then around and she runs so fast that I cannot catch her.
Is there a way that I can stop this.  Many thanks.

Hi Nancy!  Your dog sounds a lot like mine!  At her 4 month check up she weighed 2#3oz.  I wonder when they are full grown?  Will be anxious to see what she weighs at her 5 month check.  What did yours weigh at 4 months?  I think that chasing the other dogs around is just part of the Yorkie personality!  Mine chases my Amazon bird around!  Wouldn't"t you think she would be scared of a beak that big?  However, my bird has picked up a new word since we got the dog "Don't do that!"  Pat

I think my dog weighed a little more than yours when she was 4 months old.  She looks a little bigger than her actual weight because her hair is pretty long both sides of her body.  However, she is still tiny compared to my friend's chihuahua who is 5.5 lbs.  I am trying to keep her hair long (like a show dog) for a little while.  I brush her twice a day so it is not hard for her to have long hair.  I think your dog will be about the same size like mine if not smaller.  Please keep in touch and let me know how big your dog will be when she has the 5 month check.

You are lucky to have a talking bird.  I wish I could have one but it is so expensive. Nancy

I weighed my dog again this morning and she weighs 3 lbs and 6.4 ounces as of today.  Someone who has a small yorkie told me that my dog will probably weigh either 4 lbs or under when she is full grown.

I will be happy even if she will be 1/2 lb or even 1 lb heavier because she is very tiny now.  She is very healthy and playful.  The person I mentioned above said she had her yorkie (under 3 lbs) spayed when she was over 7 months old.  Nancy

Hi Nancy!  Just took my dog to the vet's, and she weighed 2#6oz.  She weighed 2#3oz last month.  This was her 5 month check and shots.  She never gained too much , did she?  When are you getting your dog spayed?  The first vet said to do it when her eye teeth came in so they could pull the old ones.  This one said she should be done before she goes into heat and they could pull the teeth later.  Confusing!  It makes sense in one way, to just have anesthesia once, but this Dr. says they arn't out long for teeth pulling and if she goes into heat, she is more at risk for breast cancer.  What does your vet say?   Thanks!!  Pat

I have been told to plan on your puppy being as big as the largest parent.  That way you are not in for any surprises.  Believe me, I was one of those people who were surprised.  I have a beautiful 10lb bundle of energy who was "supposed" to be 4-5lbs fully grown using the formula above.  I may be an odd one out. But I thought I would just share.

To get the approx. weight for a Yorkie
8-9 weeks, weight X 3 = adult weight
12-13 weeks, weight X 2 = adult weight
hope this helps :)

I posted the formula in a previous message. It can give you a good estimate but I dont think I would add the 1/2 pound. My dogs are now a year old, although they may grow a bit more(very little) These dogs did not reach the formula weight. One weighs 3 lbs, the other 6.5 lbs, a far cry from the 8.5 and 6 lb estimates.
You always have to factor in their heritage too. These dogs dad was only 2.5 lbs.
I also own 2 other puppies that are litter mates. Unbeleivable difference in size!!!!! One female at 5 months is 3 lbs the other is 6!!!!! But the mom and dad were large dogs but they threw a little baby girl.
I just had my first litter of yorkies. At birth they weighed 5 to 6 ozs. At 2 1/2 weeks they weigh 14 ozs. It will be interesting to see how much weight they will have gained by 8 weeks. I will keep ya posted.

Hello,

I have a little yorkie who is 3.5 months, he was born on 8/13/04 and he weighs about 3.8 pounds. HIs breeder had originally told me that he would probaby only get to be 4.5 or 5 pounds, she thought he would be the smalles out of the litter. But we go to the vet weekly and he gains exactly 2 ounces a week, ever since i got him, when he was originally 1.8 pounds. Should I be expecting a 9 pound dog or is it normal for them to have a growth spurt and then gain just a little bit of weight before they are full grown? Also he has floppy ears still...which is why I fell in love with him. I have his akc papers and everything...i understand that a yorkie breed can be up to 22  pounds but is it possible he is mix with a silky breed? Please advise, for anyone who knows. Thanks!

I think that it seems as though everyone is too concerned with their yorkie's weight.  It is pointless to worry about whether or not your yorkie is going to be the "right" size.  Are you going to love them any less if they end up larger than you anticipated?  I should hope not.  As long as they are happy and healthy, what does it matter?  Enjoy your yorkies and stop worrying about their weight.

Hi. I have a Yorkie who is about 10 months old and he weighs around 14 pounds. When I bought him, I was told he was a pure Yorkie and paid almost $900 for him. The store I bought him from went to another state to get him for me and when they gave me his papers, crossed out the breeders info. and his birthdate with a sharpie marker. After doing some research, I think my dog may have been 3 weeks old when i got him!!! And I am unsure if he is a "real" yorkie as well. He is the best puppy ever, and he looks just like the show dogs, except bigger. Is he a Yorkie? And can I do anything about this place I got him from??? Sorry this is sooo long!! :)

I wanted to ask you people about the hair on my puppy's nose. She's 12 weeks old and her hair is standing straight up on her nose and it gets in her eyes, and she gets these "eye boogers" that I have to clean out at least once a day. I don't care to do that, but I just think that they are caused by the hair getting in the eye and irritating it. The extra gunk is like a way that the eye protects itself. I know this has to be annoying for her. On top of that, the hair leading down from her eye is always wet. Is this a problem that fixes itself when the hair grows out, or do I need to do some trimming? If anyone could help me, that would be wonderful!

My yorkie ( 15weeks  3.8lbs with the calulation arould 8lb when mature I guess. )is black and tan his head it becoming very white with black tips.  I have been looking for pictures to see what he might look like when mature.  I have a book on yorkies that look the same with the white on the top of the head but all the pictures of the mature dogs have long coats.  I plan on keeping mine short.  I would love to see pictures in stages of months to get an idea.  Although I say he could turn purple and it wouldn't make a difference, I just love him to death.

The only thing is that he was sold to me as a tiny Yorkie obviously he isn't going to be tiny. What do you all suggest in me doing regarding contact the breeder that sold me the puppy? My purebreed puppy, Coco, was 1.8 pounds when I brought her home at 3 months. She will be 7 months old next week and was 2.35 pounds 2 weeks ago. She is a healthy eater for her size and is very active, so I don't think that the formula for future weight predictions can be set in stone. My pup was predicted to be around 3 pounds full grown, and I would be very surprised to see her bigger than that. I have heard that a dog's weight tops out at 8 months, is that right?

I don't think anyone can predict how big their Yorkie will be.  They can range from all sizes - as long as you have the papers don't worry about it.

The demand is usually for the smallest of breed which are the teacups (that really aren't a breed, they're the runt of the litter).

People try to get two runts and breed them so that the female will most likely have small puppies, but even a runt can have a big pup.

I have two Yorkies.  My male was tiny when he was born and weighed 1lb 2oz'swhen he was going on 3months.  He now weighs 8-1/2lbs.  My female is going on 4 months and weighs 2lbs.  She'll probably be around the same.

All that I know is that any breeder who tells you that your yorkie is going to be a teacup or 4 or 5lbs are assuming - they never know.

Hi. My yorkie was 10.5 ounces (not pounds) at 12 weeks old. She was hypogl. My vet put her on glucose twice a day for two months and also a growth formula food. She is now a year old, weighs right at 3lbs, and is healthy. With the right vet and pray all things are possible. Now her only problem is her hair hasn't all come in. Still short in the rearend. She is my baby girl.

Our yorkie is 15 weeks, and she weighs 3 and a half lbs. She still has her ears down, and still has her black & gold fluffy hair. Her mom was 6 lb.s and her dad was about 5.4 lbs. So we are guessing she'll be inbetween 5 and 6 lbs. full grown.

I too have a problem catching my yorkie-he's so fast! Now I keep him on a 6 foot string attached to his harness and I can always catch him. I always keep him in eyesight because I don't want him to get tangled in it and I always take the harness and sting off when he goes in his crate. I lay it on top of his crate and it goes back on when he comes out. He doesn't mind and it's also helping me potty train him!

My little boy will be 6 months on the 23rd and he currently weighs 2pds 14oz.... I don't think he will get over 3 pounds...  He was 4oz at birth.  The book I read said you could double their weight at 3 months and that gives you a good estimate of adult weight.  12 to 14 weeks.

thanks, carrie-jean

I just bought a female Yorkie puppy unseen - she'll be ready to pick up in two weeks. She will be 6 wks. old tomorrow (7-7-06) and weighs 1 lb. 10 oz. I can't use the formula above yet, but was told by the breeder that will probably be under 4 lbs. as an adult. Does that sound about right? Nancy, you didn't say how old your little Yorkie is. Can you please tell us now?  Tequito

Hi, I just got my yorkie and the breeder that sold him to me said he would be in the 31/2-4lb range but I don't see how this is true since at 9wks. he is already 2lbs. 6oz.  Do you think she just lied? is it possible for a dog weighing over 2lbs. at 9wks. to be no more than 4lbs. full grown.  I don't care if he gets bigger, I would just hope the breeder would tell the truth.  His mom was 7lbs. and his dad was just over 2lbs.  Looking to see what anyone thinks of this.

Hi!  I am an AKC Yorkie Breeder and just wanted to add something to all of the weight questions...the normal scale is 3 times the weight at 8 weeks, double the weight at 12 weeks (I've even heard double and add a pound at 10 weeks), but even then, that's the high side.  You can easily be off by a pound less, which is a lot when you're dealing with these tiny angels!!  Good Luck! Thanks - Shelli

Hello all... I have a 13 month female yorkie that weighs 8.8 lbs.  She's experiencing her first heat (finally) and I think she's gained weight in the last 3-4 weeks.  Has anyone else experienced this with their female dogs?  Her nipples are much larger, however the vet tells me it's too soon to tell if she's pregnant.  (As far as I know, she hasn't been with another male...and we keep a close watch on her.)  I think she might be having a false pregnancy...

Hi I had a very small Yorkie for 14 years sadly he died recently.  His Mother was 5&1/2lbs & Father was 2&3/4lbs.  When he was 8 weeks old he weighed 1&1/4 lbs and when fully grown between 3&1/4lbs & 3&3/4lbs.  He did live to a good age.  I am now looking for another Yorkie, there do seem to be alot of larger Yorkies around and I am a bit suspicious of the smaller ones being advertised as Tea Cup Yorkies.  You really do need to see them with their Parents.  This will give you an idea of size that they could end up being.  Tara

Hi Pat. In a previous message above, they said to take their weight at 14 to 16 weeks and double it and add 1/2 pound and that should be what she will weigh at maturity.  Keep in touch and we can have fun as our  puppys grow!  Pat

I have a pure bred yorkie with papers and everything who is 17 pounds and not overweight a bit. I've seen his parents so i know he is a pure bred. In europe many of the yorkies are of their original larger size which is from 10-20 lbs. they'vebeen bred to be the little tiny teacups most people recognize them as but that is not their true nature

she said 8.75 ounces, not pounds! geezz some of you can't read (: So 8.75 oz is about 1/2 a pound. and it's 8 wks-- so times that by 3 and it'll be around 1.5 to 2 lbs. weigh your yorkie again at 12-13 weeks and times that by 2 and you can also get a close adult weight. good luck!
