Joanna,

I was wondering the same thing, actually. I have been told that the moon and star is a Pagan symbol, and I would like an answer/explanation. I do not see why Islam should have a symbol to begin with. Is the moon and star officially a part of Islam? What does it represent exactly?

From my research, the star and moon was before Islam.  When a land, I forget which, was conquered, the ruler liked the symbol the people had, and kept it.  that land became muslim land.  from then on, it has been associated with islam, but has no roots in islam, but preIslam.

Assalam Alaikum,

Moon and Star has nothing to do with Islam.
We only know about few chapters in the Qur'anthat dealt with star and moon and sun.  To me they are symbols adopted by man for locational and historical explanations.  Sun, moon and star are God given sources of lights and other energy.  Qur'anhas been explicit about all these Allah creations.  Pity I could not make reference to any research work on this question but to me it does not disturb my being a Muslim. Do you worship moon, sun and star?  I do not think it is compulsory for the symbol star and moon should be on the mosque.

Hi you all. I recently talked to a Muslim person. I am making a movie where the Muslim symbol is to play a big role. I told him this, and said I was going to use the Star and Moon symbol for Islam, but he said that it isn't really the symbol for Islam. I am confused here, what is the real symbol for Islam?

Legend has it that Osman, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, dreamed of a crescent moon stretching across the earth. He took this as a good oman and decided to use the symbol to represent his dynasty. Some say that the five points on the star stand for the Five Pillars of Islam, but in my opinion, that's very unlikely. If you really look, you'll notice that many countries omit the use of the star and simply use the crescent moon.

I hope that this has been helpful!

i totally agree...why is there a moon and a star to represent the Islam faith. is God not mightier than the moon and the stars put together. why would he then use that which is below him to symbolize and represent Him.

if the symbol goes back before Islam itself, why is it that when Muhammad destroyed all the other gods and stuff associated with it he left one and certain symbols were kept. why  is it that certain things that are practiced in Islam link back to the same practices, practiced by the Arab pagans.

just a few questions need to be answered pls
